Can anyone help us here please? A mate of mine and myself are designing and building a special project which involves replacing the valve gear on a non GMH engine and adapting it to take GMH parts. We have been reliably informed (I hope) that some of the 1972 LJ Torana's used the GM/Vauxhall 1600-1850 slant four cylinder engine which was an OHC unit. This engine was used extensively in England where it powered the HB Viva GT, the HC Viva 1600-1800-2,000 & 2300, the droop snoot Firenza, the HS Chevette and various models of Vauxhall Victor-plus the Bedford CF van. I'm personally familiar with the engine as I used to race an HB Viva GT back in the UK during the 70's. However, I understand it wasn't a particularly popular engine option in Australia.
We are trying to find a supplier either in Australia or NZ of the cam followers/valve lifters. These look like miniature pistons, are cast iron (cold drawn so my mate tells me) and are 36.5-37mm across and about 42mm high. They have a drilling in the side to allow the insertion of a hexagonal wrench which adjusts a tapered grub screw which adjusts the tappet clearance.
We CAN source these parts in the UK, although they're not easy to find, but as my mate Terry who is building the project lives in Bathurst NSW, and I'm in Italy. Getting them from England is not a good option because of the postage costs from there. Very expensive-like rip off!
Does anyone here know of the engine we are referring to, does anyone have any bits and would be willing to sell them-or does anyone know where we might be able to source the parts we need in Australia? Maybe a GMH dealer who might just have a box of these things hiding on a shelf?
ANY help or advice will be very very much appreciated.
Many thanks.
