Hi there,

I have been advised by someone that you can have a tag remade if you are missing it, and have all the paperwork to prove that you are the legal owner of a vehicle. i.e. these people are licenced to make these missing tags, and that it is completely legitimate.

Has anyone ever heard of this, and if so, know where it is done?

Thanks

Nicole

It,s not as easy as having a receipt if you have missing tags but yes, unfortunately there are companies around who will reproduce tags.

I fail to see the need to have them remade anyway... if you have all the proof that the car is what it is, then why bother ??

because the tag has been damaged, as is the case with mine some idiot chopped a huge hole in the top corner to fit bonet pins i mean sure it doesnt really matter. i mean but i could do a full nut and bolt resto and the tag sitting in the front of the engine bay will always be detracting form the rest of the car

Ive noticed alot of "ridgey didge" XU-1s (not making comment, but then im not always sure if they are 100% so I wont say that every one i have seen is genuine) are wearing non original tags, they are usually just stainless steel plates with numbers print-stamped on them (series of dots making up letters and numbers)

I can only assume this is done so the plates cannot be stolen, or if the car is stolen, the plates are not on it.

Maybe that is a route to look at, it wont be 100% original, but it will look nicer then the damaged plate (which, if you decided to sell, would be included with the car)

My understand was only the manufacturer could 'reissue' tags, and good luck getting Holden to make you a new set of tags.

I saw a news piece about a month back saying Holden and Ford were going away from plates and going toward tamperproof stickers...but I reckon that would be worse.

If they are anything like the Microsoft stickers, I think they would be harder to duplicate.

And what happens in 20 years time when this sticker is shagged and you try to repaint the car...cant take it off so you try masking, then pull the tape off and it takes half the sticker.

Not a fan of the idea myself.

Probably get my head bitten off but...

I dont think there is anything wrong with re-stamping a clearly damaged tag.
As long as certain ownership criteria are fulfilled and it is done by a reputable business...
I know fake tags are a problem but those are the times we live in. Fake everything on the market.
Buyer must Beware.

Legal or not Legal.
If anyone knows which company does this can you please PM me the details as I have been considering re-doing one of my tags.
It is a little shabby.

Has anyone found out who does these? My car only has the ADR tag, it was in a crash in the 80's and somehow the tags never made it back onto the car. I've got all the details that are on them. Could you PM me if you have any details?

Cheers

Laurie

It's illegal Laurie... And you don't need the other tags anyway.

^^^ true, but I agree with DPZ in part. If you have the original mangled tag, then it should not be a problem having them remade, as long as you keep the old one and make anyone aware of it when you go to sell... my body number tag has a big hole in it from someone putting in a bonnet pin, luckily its only through the top and all the vital numbers are legible... but it doesnt look the best on the car !

I think you should be able to go somewhere with a set of damaged tags (the bonnet pins is a classic one) and get a new set made up. The old tags should then be destroyed... I don't like the idea of being able to go somewhere with a piece of paper with some numbers on it and getting a set of tags made by that.

^^^absolutely, but I would still want to retain the old tag in case the new one's authenticity was ever questioned....

Yeah, thats true. Its a very touchy subject! One of the many reasons that I'd never own any of the 'desirable' models...

I second the idea of stainless steel plates, and keeping the genuine ones in a safe place for plates that are worth a considerable amount.
Otherwise they can actually polish up pretty well..
...
however one of mine got caught up in the respray when i was done and now it is a nice shade of flamenco red :(
