Looking at buying a Gear Reduction Starter Motor to try stop the hard to start when hot problem I have as posted in another thread, been looking on ebay etc for info on these items :im running a Turbo 350 behind a 308 in the S.L.R do I need to buy a Starter that is specific to the T350 flywheel??.I have no idea if the Normal 308 flywheel and mine are the same?the T350 was put in years ago and for some reason I think it may differ?. Also what sort of price should I be looking at when buying one of these High Torque Starters?,just dont want to get ripped off

measure the diameter of the flex plate and count how many teeth it has.
I am sure one of the performance shops will point you in the right direction

Not sure if this helps, but my car has a 308/Turbo 350 in it and I am running an off the shelf VN onwards bosch Starter Motor (The small one) which I understand is a gear reduction or faster spinning starter motor? I haven't had any problems with the starter motor meeting up with the flywheel.

My car has problems when it gets hot, a friend of mine that is an auto elec has suggested putting a relay on it, not sure if you have tried this?

I had the same setup with my 308/TH350. I would remove the current starter motor and get that identified. It probably is a factory 308 starter.

It would be worth trying to fit some sort of heat shield/wrap to the starter and see if that fixes the problem. I would also have the battery checked.

Ive tried to remember as well as I could recall,When the T350 Box was put in Im pretty sure I didnt have to buy another Starter Motor or Alter it so may well be the same as any other 308 starter:The Extractors sit VERY close to the starter motor too which doesnt help matters theres some Gear Reduction Starters on Ebay fror 308/253 but wondering if its worth risking it as theyre probably cheap chinese crap!?.I Plan on installing heat wrap to the extractors when the new starter goes in,ive noticed some of these starter motors are $300.00-$400.00 at performance shops(Yikes!)

YEA CHECK THE BATTERY

I started having problems with my starter (mini hi torque on a chev) which slowly got worse, I was assuming starter motor
took it to auto sparkies twice only to have them tell me they couldnt find anything wrong.

Got my old man involved who is a sparky, put a meter on the battery and it showed 12v or whatever it should have, tong tested everywhere blah blah blah.

RESULT - battery is getting a bit old and tired, and probably not really big enough to start with!!!

My Mini starter was a no name one from Chris Mills, which is the reason I thought the problem was with the starter.
Ebay ones might be ok.

SOME stuff that comes from china is decent quality

To answer the original queston, the starters are all the same, the flexplates are slightly different for Trimatic and Turbo boxes.

Well,I'll ring the Autopro where I bought the battery last year and get them to test the bastard=it may have dropped a cell perhaps?= it sat there for a while not being used,I charged it up a few weeks ago and it starts fine but when the motor is hot it wont want to kick over so I wont know until I get it tested I guess?............

Just got back from Autopro, the guys there are pretty good:tested the battery and he said it was a little low(voltage wise) but had not dropped any cells and seems to think I may have an Alternator problem? so I'll have to check that next, soon as I can get hold of my brothers multimeter

It is possible that your alternator can not cope with the AU fans. I have not been able to find any specs but based on the specs of fans with similar airflow I would expect the AU fans to draw 15-20 amps each.

I was thinking the same thing! a while back, but when the fans were put in the Auto elect that wired it all up told me my alternator would be fine with those fans, may have to go for a bigger alternator??,mines just the standard V8 item(80amp?)I cant recall...............

I think the standard Torana alternators were 35A and 55A. You should be able to get an auto elec to check the alternator with the fans and lights on for no charge.

I have the stock starter swinging a 355, 10 1/2 comp, extractors etc and I have no problems hot or cold.

I do have a new battery, new leads and the starter has been rebuilt.

A friend once asked if it was a gear reduction unit as it cranked so well!

I have been warned to stay away from the type of starters that do not support the pinion though.

Cheers
