Hey there all.

My XU1 has some headlight guards on it and I was wondering what you can tell me about them? Are they a factory option? NOS or what?

Thanks in advance..

cheers Dave.

They are not plastic, the brochure clearly says steel mesh. Plastic wasn't even invented in the 70's (disco pants and certain platform shoes excepted).

All those bits were made from melted down platform shoes and Gough Whitlams hairpiece. (We'll give them a fair Gough) :D

Apparently one of those items is still alive and kicking and resisting all attempts at extracting the DNA from the plastic........

Yes, when i was a kid Nerf balls were made from Bakelite,OUCH! :D

Seriously though, plastic headlamp covers would have been introduced
around the time of the VB Commodore (1978), they also made some
that screwed into the headlamp surround on your typical HQ/HZ, as
well as LC/LX etc, problem being it sort of buggered the surround
with the extra holes.
On LJ's the steel mesh type was used, any thing else is likely to
be non original, post some pics if you can
grant

Can't say i have seen that type of plastic cover before, (at least not that old) does the cover reduce the output of the light?

These where the "ducks guts" in the late 70's, early 80's. They where available from most speed shops, the theory was if a rock hit the cover it would bounce off. They worked well untill they got hard & brittle, then they where useless. Definatly not original Holden

Cheers,
Andrew 2.

I have a set of these on my LX- have had for years - they used to be everywhere back in the 80's and even 90's like Andrew said. The only place I have seen them recently is rare spares - I believe they still sell them - check their website they were on there about a year ago.

I think they are a good investment - they don't block light when they are new but when they get all cruddy they do block your lights - the ones I have still feel soft and are very clean after 10 years (3 years of road use).

They just slip under the original light surround. I always drill a drain hole in the bottom of them too or they can fill up in the rain.

I just checked the rares site and can't find them any more(they were always hard to find on there hidden away somewhere) - you may have to ring them to see if they still do them.
