Hey. Im trying to fix a dent in a front 1/4 panel... its a little larger then the size of a fist If I push it back out from behind it pops back into pretty close to where it should be and life is good... but then if you put any pressure on it, it just pops back into the dented position :/

Just wondering the best way to attack this? will I need to heat it with the oxy to "reset" the metal or will abit of work with the hammer/dolly sort it out?

If it looks good when it is pushed out you might find it will have a slight high spot around the edge of the dent when it is pushed out

If you are going to repaint it then hold the dent out with a dolly (the same shape as the panel) as you hold the dent out tap the high spots
with a plenishing this will stop the dent from springing back. Then repair as normal.

If it's near the edge make sure the edge is not damaged this would do the same thing (repair edge)

If your not painting the damage these ways will still work but use a rag on the face of the hammer is and don't tap to hard
or you could put more dents when hammering.(Miight not be perfect but it wont be as noticable.

Don't know if this will help without seeing dent every dent is differant.

If metal is stretched then it will need shrinking.

I totally agree with what lostinspace is saying but there might be an easier way out. The term for the problem you have is called 'oil canning'. What you need to is pop the spot out so that it is in the correct position, what you need to do then is take a panel hammer and wrap the face of it with masking tape so that if you hit a panel with it it does not damage the panel. Then what you have to do is tap the edge of the panel near where the dent is. What this does is put a bit strength back in the whole area and should stop the oil cannig. Its a bit hard to describe without showing you in person but if you post a picture of the problem spot it would be easier to instruct you in fixing the problem. Put it this way I had the same problem with an entire roof of one of cars, I was able to push it down and then pop it back up. What I did was push the back up and then tap either roof gutter lip which in turn put strength back in the roof and problem solved. Hope this helps.

normally the popping only happens when a panel has been over worked...meaning that area has grown so its looking for somewhere to go..either in or out.

heat n shrink

Hammer and dolly around the edge of the panting panel to make the metal normal (straight) around the edges of where it is popping in. Once that is straight, it shouldn't pop back in any more. I feel a heat shrink will just make it stay in (introduce too much tension in the panel).
