Has anyone found a low mount chev alternator bracket that is doesnt flex????
I had a gilmer belt on my chev which ended up snaping the top bolt in the block. Got the bolt out, replaced with grade 8 bolts got rid of gilmer belt and went back to v belt. Snapped top bolt again, had to heli-coil this time.
Purchased new alternator and bracket from rocket ind. which was heaps stronger looking but wont stop the flex in the bracket which inturn pulls the far side of the alternator around making the belt not run true. Anyone own a chev and have had the same problem and fixed it????

I ended up going to a short water pump, used shorter bolts and spacers, never had the problem again.

Im running a short pump, the balancer rotates spot on, its just when the belt gets tightened up it pulls the alter. out of line. The brackets are in 4 peice's, 2 plates and 2 spacers to go over bolts. It's these spacers that are the problem I think. Im wondering if anyone has a 1 piece bracket or knows where I can get 1???? Maybe this will fix the problem????

One of the Alt brackets we are using at present is all welded together and has a stay back to one of the three engine mount holes on the block. No flex in the bracket at all

Bones is this a customised bracket or an off the shelf item?? Sounds just like what I need to fix my issues.

I would say it was an off the shelf item that has been customised by being welded fully and then a bracket with a "bend and a twist" attached for support also welded.

Have broken two bolts off in mine now!!
Trick is to replace with really soft bolts.
I used some that I got from the hardware store!

A high tensile bolt usually has a low shear factor and will therefore break easier than a softer more supple bolt that will allow a small amount of sideways movement.

Have you checked the measuremen from the block to water pump pully face .Sometimes this has to be pressed in or out a fraction so the belt runs true .
Use stock bracket as it has a hole to put a lever in to tension belt @ chrome
aftermarket ones havent. Have had Chevs fore years , never a problem .

How tight are you doing your belt up??

were using grade 5 bolts and a shitty old bracket and a short pump, but with the old long pump weve never had these problems.

Only ever use a V belt though... I Dont do it up Tooo tight.. no drama here!

best of luck!

Tiny, The belt is reasonably tight otherwise it squeals, could be the belt manufacturers problem as I've found on my landcrusier that the only belts that dont squeal are genuine toyota.(this sucks as genuine are expensive as). I'm pretty sure the belt is a 'gates' brand. Might see if I can source a different brand, might help problem. I worry about the belt coming off at high revs if its loose but its probably better than snapping another bolt.

yeah my belt slaps around a little ar revs, but doesnt squeal...

Gates is a good brand maybe you need to touch your pulleys with some pulley soap i cant remeber exactly what it does, but it aids in teh belt gripping the pulley and stopping the squeal.

TO tension mine i make sure theres around 10mm of "travel" in the belt when i push on teh long side basically it moves teh length of the first joint of my finger when i push on it. Seems ot have worked ok so far!

Just an idea mate.. i can thin kof nothing worse than what your going through!! i hope it gets sorted for ya one way or another
Best of luck.
