Hi all,

Can anybody give me some info on what is the best shifter to bolt onto a top loader gearbox which allows the gearstick to sit central to suit the console with minimal modifications?

I have an XY/XW one here, but needs to be modified in the way it mounts. Has anybody successfully fitted one of these?

Cheers,
Paul

We have an Indy Hurst on it currently, but it sits too far to passenger side to accomodate console.

You need to space it over and I bent the handle to me.

Hi Rory, the indy hurst shifter I have on at the moment is as close as it can be to the gearbox so I'm not sure what you mean about spacing it over. Would you have any pictures of yours and does it have a console?

You need to fit a spacer between the stick & the shifter mechanism or put a larger bend in the stick or both.

judging by your photo, you need to move the bracket that shifter bolts to forward, there are extra holes on this bracket and your gearbox has extra holes as well, this nearly centres it from the original hole but still on the left hand side..this means cutting it as well you will gain a fair bit forward then make a bracket of your gear stick according to suit your console..i hope this helps as i've done this a few times before..

Would it be possible to rotate the gearbox on the bellhousing 15 or 20 degrees and redrill the bellhousing?

Thanks guys for all your help.

Unclefesta, I think you've got the right idea there. I've spent a bit of time looking at it and will have to make up some sort of bracket which will not only push the shifter forward but also centre over the box. By mounting the shifter on the RHS of that bracket will allow the stick to come out central.

Then I'll have to work out how to cut the linkages off the bottom of the shifter and fabricate some 'h' pattern replacements that will allow the linkages to still select down the LHS.

I hope I haven't confused you as I've nearly confused myself. Do you think this is possible?

Paul

hi paul,..now your on the right track,..the best way to do this is with the gearbox out of the car, don't shorten your linkages til last,..also if you heat your linkages with a oxy and turn them inside out so there closer to the gearbox it saves alot of belting of the floorpan...

Unclefesta,
Thanks for your help, I think I got a plan with the bracket modification and the gear linkages, but I'm still unsure about the shifter. If I bolt it on the RHS of the bracket then somehow I need to get the selector arms on the bottom of the shifter to come out of the bottom of the shifter mechanism and cross over the bracket so as they can select down the LHS, if you know what I mean. Would you know if there are any rubber or plastic pieces in the Indi hurst shifters, that might stop me from wanting to weld onto it?

Paul.

My cousin went through this with the SS I sold for him recently, If you're open to changing the shifter, you can do as he did and purchase a reco genuine shifter from Bob Matic (Ford Muscle Parts) that is modified to suit a Torana and it sit's fairly nicely. If I can recall it was just a bolt in.

When he purchased the car it had a Renegate which was all the way over on the passenger's side, all the B & M's he purchased had the same problem without requiring major modifications, so he went the genuine route...

Don't mind the mess, it was a work in progress...

Hello I run a toploader why do you want a console what purpose does it serve ! Toploader gearboxes generally place the shifter to the left hand side end of story .

As suggested by members modification can be done .

I Have a toploader from a 253 UC Hatch I bought a few years back. box is from a 351 fairlane going by the numbers. It has the standard ford shifter mechanism with an Aussie 4sp stick weld in the correct position to suit the console. There were no mods to the floor/tunnel of that car.
