Hi I am just in the process of cutting out some bog and rust from the trusty LJ. Just wondering what sort of dollars would be involved in a total respray. The guy that did the panels quoted me $1500 to do the car from spray putty stage including helping me remove the doors and taping up all of the car. I have to remove the motor, boot, bonnet locks, handles, fuel filler and glass. He will buy all of the paint and other consumables. I think this is a pretty good price. Just wondering what you guys reckon? Thanks in advance for the input.

Cheers SUPALJ

p.s. My choice of colour is blood orange!!

Impossible to say without seeing the result. It's cheap, i'll give you that, but you've gotta remember that some resprays can be lousy.

If he's a pro then it should be okay, esp if he has done previous work on the car and you have got to know him a bit.

2-Pac or Acrylic? Clearcoat? etc

If you planning to keep the car for a long time and its gonna see some hard times, definitely invested in getting it done in 2pac because acrylic chips too easily. 1500 is cheap for what he is doing but if you can push the budget or find a workshop that does cash only jobs or something go for that instead.

This guy has been a panel beater for more than 30 years. He really seems to know what he is doing. This will be in 2pac with red oxide primer underneath. I'm pretty sure he will do a good job as his advertising is through word of mouth. He is doing this all at my place so no extra cost of getting the car to a repairer and back. I just have to figure a way to keep everything dust free. Thinking of lining my shed with plastic material from work.

Dust free, correct humidity, right temperature, large enough compressor to keep of with the workload.

Massive job with 2pac if you want a reasonable finish.

I have a couple of mates who are spraypainters and they refuse to do backyarders as they just cant replicate the optimum conditions that they work in at work and they know that me being as fussy as I am I would never be happy with a second rate backyard job. No matter how cheap it was to do.

have you seen this guys work on jobs he has completed? have you spoken with previous clients to see if they are satisfied 6 months or longer down the track?

There are spray jobs and there are spray jobs. Depends what you want but I would certainly be looking at his workmanship first.

Of course if you have prepared the car and the spray job turns out shit it will always be your fault whether he can spray worth a damn or not :)

Cheers

Check out his previous work to see if his workmanship is any good & just pay him a deposit, never give them all the money up front & remember there is no warranty on backyard jobs.

with the lc/lj, how far do you what to go. You will find rust in spots you can never get to. You would be a pretty game people either way of the fence on a quoted price. What about the rust you can't see, who's paying for that? Is he doing that for nothing? You get what you pay for most of the time. My mate has been a panel beater for more than 30 years too, and he is rough as. Owned his shop for 30+ years, and could say I have seen a good work yet( flatout all he's life). 30 years means nothing at all, your good or your not. Sometime it's better to spend a little more. But you never no, he could be as good as they come. Very very cheap I think.

I live in near sydney north, the best panel/spray painter i know quoted $2000 for a booth 2pac in red to just paint it!
I would have supplied him the car completed and prep with the undercoat of his preference.
I wouldnt take a chance on a cheap job, get plenty of quotes and better still - word of mouth.

For comparison purposes, I was talking to my panel shop a few months back regarding my mates 300ZX - a drive - in drive-out fully guaranteed paint job - allowing for the 'average' amount of panel work on a 20 year old car was in the order of $9K to $10K to strip, repair and repaint (Red). With the very clear qualification that it would be extra if they uncovered a real can of worms when the paint came off.
