I've had good successs with Glasurit Epoxy Etch Primer.

Lay it on bare metal, then you can do your repairs over it if you want.

This is what i use just as an etch primer. Its a single pack epoxy and it dries very quick as well, you can leave in your gun for ages then give it a stir

just before you want to use it, I use it to cover an area if im not sure how long it will be before i can get back to it. I then use a two pac high fill over it .

Protec EX-408. Its a 2 pac zink phospherate based epoxy primer. Very high solids, some rust preventative properties and non porous. Applies at about 75 microns dry film per coat and sands back beautifully.

Just as an example, i had a large water tank sandblasted at work. I put two coats of this primer over it two years ago, and it is only just starting to show some surface rust.

Just get it.

Cheers.
