some the VL/Commodore forums are a wealth of info..and a goldmine for the parts you need.

www.turbocalais.com.au is a good one

Will be a piece of cake if it's a 304 VL except for engine bellhousing pattern. If it's one of those Nissan engines best bet is to replace it with a V8 and then fit the TH350/400/700/4L80.

Is it a Trimatic or Turbo pattern block? And which Turbo box do you want to fit?

www.calaisturbo.com.au should help you out.

I know you can get bellhousings to suit trimatic 308's to turbo boxes so bolting one up to the block shouldn't be a problem.

It will be a problem as most of those awful bellhousing adapters don't work that well. You are best off getting the TH bellhousing modified when the box is rebuilt so it bolts straight on. That or modifying the block when the engine is rebuilt.

Both are standard fitment to VB/VC so whichever you choose will fit fine using factory bits. TH400 is a heaps better box but for a stocker TH350 would probably be better. Try some of the Commodore wreckers and get a factory crossmember, tailshaft and speedo cable. If you go with TH350 you'll also need a kickdown cable. VK trimatic T-bar will shift either, or use factory VL trimatic shifter. If it was originally a V8 VL you'll be able to use the trimatic tailshaft if you go TH350, TH400 is a shorter shaft with a bigger front uni.

You might even be better off with a TH700R4 out of a VN/VP V8. They are pretty cheap now, will use the TH350/400 ring gear etc, will just about fit on a TH350 crossmember. Tailshaft is shorter. Not sure on shifter (I think VL Nissan box was an electronic overdrive hence only 3spd shifter), but VN would go close to fitting.

I was actually considering that yel, how do you know which models had the non electronic auto or was it all VN / VP`s?
Thanks again.

In Australia only VN, VP and VG. V8 box is a straight bolt in behind the 308 but is longer hence the tailshaft being shorter.

The were also fitted to VQ & VQII Statesman & Caprice models.

I also just remembered that VB-VK tailshaft won't fit as VL will have a Borg Warner diff. Your original trimatic shaft will work with a TH350 though.

Just shorten the VL one. You'll only have to change the yoke if you go TH400/4L80. TH350 and TH700/4L60 will use the trimatic one. Just double check with a tailshaft shop as they might have better ideas.
