Hey All
Just a quick question as to how much clearance some of you guys/girls have between the crossmember and the bottom (front) of the sump in an LH with a 350 chev that have done this conversion. Actually I think its the steering rack that sits up a bit that its close too.
We have a High Energy sump suit chev in LH (so that shouldnt be a prob) and we have CAE chev engine mounts and we only have 3 - 4mm of clearance between the bottom of the sump and the cross member. This obvisouly isnt desirable with a high torque motor.
Any advice? statements?
Thanks heaps
Ill run a "my car" thread soon once its all detailed
Brett

350 chev sump clearance from the crossmember

^^^ My new russel sump for LJ hits the standard chev pickup, it seems no one can get it right.
Brett if it's on the flat it should be ok. Not sure about the LH but in LJ i had 3 ml clearance on the very edge and split the sump. Oxy and hammer fixed the high spot on the crossmember. Also, keeping load on the chain block when doing the mounts up might help if you havn't already.

My HE chev sump clears easy, im using torana engine mounts (rubber part), maybe you have different rubber mounts? maybe the sump is deeper to clear a stroker crank?

I have a bigger HE sump for the 383 and mine is pretty much touching the steering rack. I am waiting until the motor is finally started before I decide what to do about it.
What did yu do about yours struggler?

I never noticed it until I pulled the engine out.
I gave the crossmember a few quick taps, I prefer not to touch the sump.

UCV80, we are using a HE sump that is for the 350 into LX, I know there was a stroker sump that we could have got but we didnt. You certainly wouldnt want the sump any closer to the crank than it is now so we have ruled that out as a problem. But to be honest the HE sump may have been a waste of money because the Camaro sump that was on it was almost the same clearance and if we fix the engine mounts it would have fit.
There must be something wrong with the engine mounts. They are the Castlemaine Rod Shop Engine mounts suit 350 into torana. Possibly the rubbers arent made correctly (and they have the correct code on them, A1157) but they have been installed as suggested, we double checked this.
There is about 3mm clearance on the outside of the sump, which is where it would possibly torque and hit, but were still not 100% comfortable with such small clearance. Once my wedding is over, which is this weekend and we are using the torry, we will look at it again.
Its not hitting but id hate to be up it one day, crack the sump, lose the oil and bye bye chev.
PS - the torana was engineered with the chev and supercharger on the weekend, its sporting 8 codes now and the engineer was very impressed so I feel comfortable driving it. Pics to come
Cheers guys

If you do crack it, it should only be a very small leak. I drove mine for a while before fixing it.
It may be closest to the crossmember at idle with a big cam. It's not enough clearance in my opinion but if the 3ml clearance is passenger side i wouldn't be overly concerned.
Those pics would be great.

I am running a s/b chev 383ci with a std rear pickup HQ type and have around 3mm clearance at the closest point and haven't had it touching. As the engine torques up it should give better clearance. The sump also clears the subaru steering rack by aprox 15mm. Stuff those expensive HE sumps I have no oil pressure or oil temp problems for street use.
