Hi all ,

I have been dewelling over an idea of getting 17 inch hotwires specially made ,
I love my hotwires even though i dont run them any more.
A while ago i contacted ROH about this idea and put it to them , they said that it could be done but would be costly to me ,
I would have to get extra rims casted up and supply tyres to be tested and destroyed to be approved Australian Standards and to comply with ADR Regs.

I open to any thoughs regarding this idea,
If I did go ahead with this Idea i would change all my toranas to 17in Hotwires 8x,10x,12x.

Let us know what you think.

Cheers SSL31 :D

It would interesting to see how they look as a 17" wheel , whether that style still looks good in the bigger rim.

Ive always thought Hotwires looked best with wiiide, fairly tall profile tyres - not a combo you'd even try on 17" rims?

maybe something like that the centre proportions will be the hardest part

I was skeptical that they would look decent in a bigger size but UNVSM8 that looks pretty good! The bigger centre makes all the difference, just needs more tyre on it now

Hotwires are way too dated looking now, sure they were the 'in' thing in the 70's & 80's but times have changed. They would look terrible in 17inch - they arent even that good looking in smaller sizes.

I contacted CSA back in 2003 when I was in the tyre industry about getting some 15" Sprintmasters made. They said yes, but it would require deposits of "thousands of rims" before they would start. Did ROH give you an indication of how many would be required?

And put me down for two sets if it happens.

Never!! LOL :tease:

I must admit I do own a set of them - my cousin gave me a set of 15's he picked up at a swap meet for $50 - not sure if they are for LC/LJ or LH/LX though, might have to try them one day.

I suppose its like the FR range of wheels from Simmons, they are a sexy wheel and I will always have a soft spot for them - just like you guys with the hotwires.

Yes, Ben's Photoshop of the 17" hotwires looks great even though we are used to seeing a hotwires with a more balloon looking tyre( 60's & 50s series). The photoshop one looks like 40-45 series and still looks good.
However there are other ways the 17" hotwire could be designed for casting.

1. They may leave the centre and wire areas the same(standard size) and simply cast a higher outer edge to make it 17".
or
2. Leave the centre the same and make the wire area bigger to the outer edge .

I'de like to see these in photoshop.

Its a great idea. 17" tyres can be cheaper and more widely available.
The obvious question is how much?
If a set of refurbished 14x10 & 14x8s can cost you more than $1000, what would a custom run like this cost?

Hi guys , Thanks for all comments , I havent got down to the nitty gritty with centre size , wire size or dish step down but the photo shop looks the stuff ,

Chopper , When i contacted them it was about 2 - 3 years ago , they didnt say a min quantity , but i did state that i want 2 to 3 sets .

I m running Roh 17x10 and 17x12 chicanes and i have 15 inch hot wires sitting around, putting them side by side trying to image hotwire centres got me thinking about getting them made , I was only looking at making them as a one off thing.

Im not up to date with cast mouldings and what happens with the process , but the other way is cnc machined i if could be done .

What got me all started about them is the new HDT new generation ve's with their retro 19 inch rims.

cheers SSL31 :D

Agreed, I always thought them to be very ugly wheels, on any car.
who knows... with decent dish, 17s might look good.

I've always thought 13" hotwires generally look pretty bad, they can look good on a baby Torana.
14" hotwires generally look good on a baby Torana, but don't do it for me on a box Torana
15" hotwires look awesome, full stop
16" would look very awesome
17" would probably be a bit bigger than ideal, but potentially could look great too.

Hotwires can look fantastic with low profile tyres, just look at a few racing cars with low profile slicks on 15x10s

If they just made heaps of 15" hotwires, I would be satisfied

Yes and No.
13"x7" always looked good. Its only those 13"x 5" & 6" hotwires that should never have been made. They look ****.
