6 cylinder head ID check

6 cyl Yella Terra head stamped "7420105" "H244"

Can some kind guru decipher these numbers, ive searched all over but im getting mixed information.

its 7420105. people keep referring to 7420109, but its not. ...and H244 i was told is 24AUG1964, but it must be more like 1974, being a 202 head, but im not sure

From the pic in you other thread its a small chamber head...It is either a 149 head if the date code is 1964...or it could possibly be a 173 head if its 1974.

Can someone confirm 173 has a small chamber head?..and cast number

The Holden part numbers have nothing to do with what Yella Terra might have done to it...does it have some numbers stamped here:

I've got a 173 in a 10/72 LJ which is original. The cast number on the head is 2811929 and it's a high compression unit. The head cast date is J262.

Hi buddy I have a 186 head with the number 7420109 can you tell me what this number means and if it is any good also has g234 on the casting I think its a yt head looking at the ports also whats the value on these heads thanks

Hi TRRANA.
The date code is H244 which is 24 AUG 1964.
The date codes changed format from the H244 to 24H4 style in mid 1973 so if it was a 1974 head it would have the later style date code.
Looking at the pictures it shows that it has adjustable rocker gear so its not a 173/202 head but a earlier head.
If it is ok with you I would like to use the picture you have posted of the chamber,
in to the id guide I am putting together for 6cyl heads.
I am curious on one thing with this head does it say it is a H or a L comp head.
This should be at the front on the left hand side just behind where the thermostat housing goes.

my only concern with using rocker posts to ID a head ..is that if its a YT head all that becomes null and void....but the format of the cast date pins it down.

cant wait to see your guide..started taking pics for a guide myself a while back but gave up.

A 7420109 head by what I have read is a 149 High compression head.
g234 Means it was cast on the 23rd of July 1964 so it was a EH model head.

What I have realized and have started to do is make two guides.
One for std heads and one for Y/T heads.
That way modified Y/T etc heads will not confuse the std head guide and hopefully I will be able to work out a better guide for Y/T
heads.
The Y/T head side of things may end up being the harder one to do, as so far I have not been able to get a 100% sure way of IDing
a Y/T head as there seem to be early and later versions of them.
There is also of course lots of copy's made by lots of other places.
Some better some worse than Y/t heads.

So if yours is a L it may be a fair thing to say that it may be that your 7420105 head may be the low comp version of a 7420109 head.
