I am having a very hard time with my T5.

The motor is in and the box seems to be hitting to the top of the tunnel.

The motor is a 304 and I am using a Holden T5. All came out of a VR Commodore.

I have attached a picture of the work I have done in order for it to get close to fitting.

Its still not all the way in. The only way I managed to get it close to fitting is by separating the bell housing and mounting it first to the back of the motor. Any help will be great.

Allot of people have mentioned that there is no tunnel work but look at the top of the transmission, the box sits higher than the tunnel. I need to make the box goes in easy because later on when I start doing modifications, I dont want any hassles especially when its all painted fresh.

ARRRRGGHHHH!!!

My GOD!!

I was hoping to fit a TKO 600 without cutting the original floor/tunnel at all, I understand your frustration.

Most important thing of all is your drive line alignment, get this wrong and nothing else will matter.

I expected there to be issues with the shifter area but you have removed part of the tunnel in the front?

I would guess it is all too high by the looks.

A trick with the tunnel shifter area is to graft in the shifter area/patch of the donor commodore so you can used the same boot/seal.

I have seen it done with the commodore patch in a LX hatch but it cut into the brace between the sets. Mind you there are different T5's too.

Good luck.

what are you using to mount the engine?

because if you can get the engine to sit lower the gearbox will too?

Yes, it is sitting a little high, but its not all the way in yet.

I think i have to cut a little bit more from the top of the tunnel.

Its making me go insane!

Hey Josh,

Im using Hq-WB engine mounts.

The motor is far back as it will go. Its hitting the back fire wall.

I just thought with these T5, they would fit straight in.

What isn't all the way in, what direction does it have to go? Does the gearbox need to move forward from the position shown?

HQ mounts? Is there a possibility that these mounts are contributing to these issues?

Does anone remember if HQ mounts sit the engine up or down vs standard torana

A member on this forum said that the LX mounts do sit a little bit further down than the HQ, but not by much.

I'm pretty HQ mounts send it down and slightly back, but not significant difference.

In about 2cm? In where, what part needs to move which direction? Is the engine sitting correctly?

You could always drop the front crossmember a little, that would give you some maneuvering room even its only 5-10mm and you don't even undo the nuts all the way.

It has to go 2cm in from top and bottom.

The engine is sitting correctly but tilting back very close to the fire wall so the box will be easier to fit.

I can drop the cross member but i want it to fit in easy with less hasle. I might have to keep modifying the tunnel.

Looking at the current state of that tunnel,I'd be cutting the whole thing out and welding a new one in a bit higher.A commodore one so you can utilise the shifter boot,or another torana one, higher at the front tapering down to the original position just behind the shifter. You will still have to sort something out with the shifter boot though. And your console may no longer fit either.

Unfortunately I don't think you will be able to get the T5 in there with out getting the tunnel fabbed.

I have got a V6 fitted in a LX and we needed to get the tunnel enlarged quite a bit, the motor does sit close to the firewall though. But if you move it forward then you encounter sump clearance issues.

Heres some photos.

I have been told that the FORD T5 is a smaller box and all you need is an adaptor plate.

The tunnel cost $500 which wasn't too bad I thought, it probably is a little to large but at least there is plently of clearance around the box for any future boxs like a T56.

Cheers

That looks really good youngy!

Who did your tunnel and the welds.

The body on my LX is going to get stripped back to bare metal and re painted inside and out. So i might get the tunnel done all in one when we do the body work.

I just finished putting a 304 and t5 in an LH. Used torana v8 engine brackets, HQ engine mounts which sit the engine lower than the torana ones. Put engine in first, then bolted bell housing and gearbox up. NO tunnel modification at all.
Had to cut a bigger hole in floor pan to get shifter up and through and that was it!
