hey all.

Ive Just completed a worked 253 for my hatch, We Had it all running sweet in the workshop, then as soon as i left problems started arizing,

I had elect dizzy witch #@$^%& out and fired off 3cyls at once, therefore Gone Back to std Points dizzy for meanwhile till i get money up again

Im running a New 600 Holley vac/sec, I can manage to set the air/fuel ect and have it idle on the driveway for ages no skipping a beat, Ive Adjusted the dizzy EVERYWHERE From Lock to lock But for the life of me CANNOT get the car to Run well under load
At idle i can rev it to 7000rpm and it wont make a hassle,

But the minute i put it down the road, under acceleration Its just Gutless, Backfires like a gun(exhausts now rooted due to this)
It performs like a miss and backfire at the same time, But the plugs are NGK brand new 2nd hottest plug, The engines running 10.5:1 compression, Im running a CH304 Crane cam with the rollmaster cam timing kit That ive Advanced 2'Degrees

Also running Premium fuel, with 6psi from the reg to carb

The Engine had lots of balls last week it wouldnt sputter or anything Just put it down and it would pull away

If theres anyone with anymore Ideas on what to do Please help Im out of ideas, and things to try, Im gettin frustrated and am at the point i want to sell the hatch :furious:

Thanks in advance
Marc.

is your points dizzy 100% good? could you try another dizzy, cause did it start playing up after it fired 3 cyl at once, when you swapped the dizzy over?

when you had it running in the w/shop, was it under load?

Sounds very much like you have main jet problems. When on load the engine requires everything the main jet can deliver. The back fifing could be as result of a lean mixture from a problematic main jet supply.

An exhaust gas analyser would tell you immediately the situation with fuel air ratio.

Try putting some choke on when it won't pull. If this helps it is definately a fuel starvation problem.

If it blew the exhaust it is more like an electrical miss than lean out as it needs to accumulate fuel in the exhaust to blow it. Lean mix normally caused backfire in carb. Did you get the firing order right when you changed dissy?
If so chances are what ever went wrong in the first place is still the prob.
Did you fit the correct coil for points?
Good luck finding it.

Ive used the same dizzy and COIL (GT40 unit) from the Old engine that worked fine, But monday i will grab my other dizzy from the workshop, I did put the dizzy in the right way, The whole cab has been Rebuilt by a specialist, Using all but new parts ect, Jets are new also, They drilled out the idle jets as they are lean from factory aswell, But im thinking it could be more distributor related as it hasnt Changed much since the carb was done,

I shall continue this mission and Will let you all know how it pans out, Cheers for ur help so far guy's :spoton:

Marc.

greenmachine,
I had exact symtoms with my tripples when i first
put them on. Turned out i had fuel pressure reg set
to high, engine was simply over fueling at idle and
had fowled the plugs. You said they drilled out idle
jets in your carb. You also said you fiddled with
mixture settings & that you had it idleing for a fair
while. I'd pull the plugs, clean em up. Then take it for
a run, don't let it idle too long, if it's better then atleast
you know where to begin.

I'm pretty sure that when you up the comp ratio (and running on plup) you should be running a colder plug with a smaller gap, thats what i had to do when i done heads and cam on my 253 in my commo.

What about the dissy cap? New or Old scabby one with lots of cracks.
Could be carbon tracking inside? old leads shorting to earth?
Run it in the dark, are you getting a lightning show?
