If you were going to put a v8 into your LC/LJ, Which is better, the red motor, blue, black or the injected 5L? Considering more power(capability, stroking, blower),better sound, reliability, and regulation with our laws today in NSW? Thanx,i want ot buy a v8 and start building it myself, taking my time, but not sure which to get,not sure on the differences aswell. Know the few such as little vary in power, emissions but other than that.... So your thoughts would be great.
Cheers

308 breathing through late model heads is what I consider the best sound and bang for buck.

The most radical difference is early style heads, compared to late model heads. The early style heads (or 'HQ style heads') have reasonably small ports that are pretty mediocre. The late model heads (or 'VN heads') flow huge cfm, more modern port design, evenly spaced exhaust ports etc. Heaps of people use carbies on them, even though they were only released for EFI applications.

Exhaust port pattern is different, so pipes are not interchangeable. I don't know about inlet manifolds? V8s aren't my fort

Basically people run an early block with modern heads, so that they can avoid the pollution requirements of a 1990s car, which the block would be out of if it matched the heads.

Really depends on just how much power you want, budget & how you want it to look in the engine bay...injected or carby...vn heads or early heads.

Simplest way to go is to use an earlier red block with vn heads & injection,no need for pollution crap & you can have engine bay looking nice. Also makes for a nice cruiser with decent grunt if matched up with the right diff & transmission.I've seen lc/j's run 13's with a stock as a rock 165kw vn engine.

I'd just stick a VN-VSIII injected motor in it. Simple conversion. Back it up with a T5, TH350, M21 whatever suits you. Change the memcal later on for more grunt. Will give great economy in a tiny little LC/J and you won't have any emissions worries other than cats.

no harrop does a manifold for the vn heads and carby
um and maybe redline
but your exaust and cams are different too

Thats not your problem...your problem is massive power and not being able to get it to the ground because of the lightweight body...power is good...transferring that to the ground is a whole new problem. RED is correct..but any 5L is better than any early block.

The HG Red 308H Block, there are some of them Blocks that are thicker than the QT/HT/11QT Etc
i think the 308H Block that are thicker, them 308H ones, where the 308 is Stamped on the Block by it self have 308 M or something on them,i think some HG Monaros have them, and the early Repco 5000 308 engine are the same or started from them 308H Blocks originally

Any VN on blocks makes the old ones look like a handgrenade...the webbing alone makes them a better proposition.

Walkinshaw 4 bolt mains or VN Group A four bolt mains.
Both use Chrysler diametre roller lifters......
Bit pricey for the everyday though....

Is the Norm 308 VN Block the same as the VN SS Group A,i thought all VN EFI 308 were 4-Bolt Main Blocks with A9L Bearings

Nope, the grp a blocks have thicker mains webbing for the 4 bolt caps.

Normal vn block is bit thinner & still needs welding, machining etc for 4 bolt caps.
