LSD Test

If I release the clutch and both rear wheels spin/skid together is this a good indication of the vehicle having a LSD. I don't really want to pull the diff centre out of the vehicle. Are there other ways of checking for LSD while the centre is intack.

Jack the back of the car up so the wheels are in the air.

Gearbox in neutral, turn one wheel. If the wheel on the ot her side spins in the opposite direction you have a single legger. If it spins the same way you have an LSD or a locker.

Then put the car in gear and repeat, if you cant turn the wheels you either have a very very tight LSD or a locker, if its very firm but one wheel turns one way and the other turns the ot her, you have an LSD.

A flogged out single legger will often spin twins when you step the clutch, so not really a good way to tell.

My box Torana with a ban-go single legger pulls twins in the gravel :D

No. A locked diff, LSD, mini/full spool and a single spinner are all capable of spinning both wheels.
Also a worn LSD may only spin one wheel.

Hi,
Jacked the car up under the diff.
Put the car in neutral, spun one wheel forward the other side spun the other way.
Did the same when I spun the wheel on the other side.
Put the car in gear, did the exact same as it did in neutral.
Any idea what diff centre?

i read in a holden manual years ago that a new LSD should be 68 pound before slip.

test with a torque wrench..

That will only happen if the diff is completely locked with a spool or weld. most lsd's have a clutch system so the wont be lsd unless there is enough power put through them. my new ss spins opposite and theyre lsd.

Sorry lj304 but any LSD (except perhaps a Hydratrak/viscous) will spin both wheels the same direction when you spin one, sounds like you have an open diff too

In the clutch style LSD , it is just that, "Limited Slip Diff", the left and right wheels/axels are essetially locked/held together in rotation by sping loaded clutches, until the forces to rotate them at different speeds overcome the clamping pressure of the clutches (when you turn a corner) , thus allowing/forcing a certain amount of "slip" upon the clutches.

This type of LSD (in good condition) will always spin both wheels in the same direction when un-loaded (car off the ground) :spoton:



Not sure what model ss you have (but you could have a Viscous type LSD) and yes some diff centres like Torsen LSDs "will" spin in oposite directions when both wheels are off the ground but the clutch and cone style LSDs (what these guys are talking about in the old holdens) should turn both in the same direction without load (both wheels off the ground)
