Hi all,

I have a torana that came from Adelaide - built there in July 1977 and I think first registered there. Rego plates were SMJ..... Does that sound like the right numbers for that time - also anyone got a pic of a plate at that time - interested in the plate colours etc.

cheers

Yeah shine a torch on/near your car at night, you will see what he is talking about.

Until '77, we had white on black plates only. I don't know about the other states

SA plates at the time (mid 1960 - late 1970s) were white with black letters, raised. SA top middle. From about 1980 we went to the SA Festival State plates. White with black letters, raised, the SA was deleted and replaced with the SA coat of arms between the letters and numbers instead of the dot of the previous plates. SA The Festival State was printed in blue raised letters underneath the letter/numbers. In the 60s the plates started with R and were changed to the S sometime in the early 70s. From 1980 we changed to U (still a festival plate) then V, W (late 90s) X is the latest. Interestingly SLR ### is a standard plate in SA as is XUI ### and can be fitted to any registered car.
My 74 LH is SUW, my 75 LH is SWJ both original plated cars.

My 77 hatch is SCX. Seems a bit early to me?

Cheers

The plot thickens! Just checked some old rego, my 77 LX was SMU, same as the Baron. My first Torana was a LH, SGZ, I think 74.
I am 99% sure the plates on my LH's are original as I am the second owner in both cases and have the dealership papers showing rego #
Cant help but wonder if like the eastern states the plates were reissued, that would explain earlier letter/number combos on later vehicles. First I'd heard of it if that is the case.

Here's a rear shot of my LH with the style of plate your talking about, had them re made as they had faded.
These plates are from 1974.

I had a 1977 LX with SHT 847...
They were the original plates for the car.

Mate, Transport SA do new R and S series numberplates. Alot of people in SA that have Toranas do for example "SLX-178" or any other combination of letters and numbers after the "S" as long as it is not currently being used by another motorist. My car is from QLD brought it back to SA and ordered the old syle SA numberplates black letters on white background (Just like the Maroon LH torana ^^^^ there) My car is a January 1978 LX torana so I reckong SLX-... fits the vintage as well!!

Good luck.

Also have a Kingswood with original 'claridge motor' number plates (has the dealer writing on them) - It's a 76, number plate is SYH

Correct, the dealers used to do that back in the good old days, these days they place a cheap plastic frame around your plate! :<_<:
