Try waving an oxy torch near to the engine number pad. That sometimes will make the number appear.

I think you can X Ray it some how,im not sure who dose it,but i have heard of it done, maybe your state RTA might be able to Help or your State Police Stolen Car Squad, they x ray where your old number is,but if its machined off it might not come up

Bit sus I think.

Mods - This is heading down a dangerous path, we all know why some engines are missing there numbers and speaking for myself i don't want this type of stuff on a forum I frequent due to probity and ethical issues.

Why you bought an engine missing its numbers I'll never understand, surely you want to put this into a car at some stage and drive it?

I don't think an xray will work because due to metal causing a black out. When stamped the metal should retain a 'crush memory' and I believe that heat may be able to reveal this.. even for a few mins (Blow torch)

My advice is to contact your states stolen car squad, they will want to see you, the egine and the person details of who you bought the engine off.

On another note.
If the engine number has gone as a result of machining operations, ie decking the block, I would wonder how much has been taken off, and whether it will be any good for your intended purpose.
If it has been decked for a special project, you may have dramas with piston and or valve clearance.
Have heard that acid may help show numbers, but not sure which type and how reliable it would be.

while i understand the angle you are coming from you have got to remember the holden v8 engines are known for loosing there numbers when machined/decked however if its been ground off by other means that would be a different issue.

i have just had 2 355 decked to zero deck height and lost the numbers on both of them.

i have taken a few over the pits and had no trouble with getting them passed here in sa

In Victoria, they check the engine number from the rego that it had before,

Was the car a v8 before?
Did you buy the engine of someone else?
Why has the car got no chasis Number?
Has it got the tags?(The chasis number should be on there) if it has they should be able to look it up for you!

Daz what he said

"i have a 308 that's been decked and i've lost my engine number"

And

"bearing in mind i don't have access to the rego papers or chassis numbers/former owners???"

The first implies he knew the number at some stage but they have been lost since.. we shall assume due to no nefarious reasons.

The second line implies that this engine came out of a car that he knew about, but can not make contact with them to get tracking details.

Obvious if he could do either of these then he would get the numbers stamped easy enough.

I am trying to think of any situations where you would be missing the numbers and not able to get data on the original car, owner, chassis, rego.

I keep coming back to that this block is out of a stolen car.. unless there is some other way this came about?

sshatch355 Hi mate, Here is VIC if your car gets a once over they will check the block number against your vic road record, if you don't have it stamped it is considered a stolen engine until you can prove otherwise. Is SA different in that regards?

Fairly common with V8 Holden blocks after decking, mine has 11qt.... on 1 side and a QEX .... on the other. The 11QT is very faint.

over here restamping even with the original number is a big no no so its better to leave it blank and have the recipts for the engine work to show why the number has gone.

as you probably know we only get inspected over here when we get defected you dont even need an inspection for most v8 conversions as its just a engine number change and they want to know it has front discs.

the only problem with the that system is theres so many bombs/rust buckets on the road

so how do you guys go about proving its not stolen???

it would be so much easier if the vehicle laws were the same australia wide

If there is no engine number and you have a receipt for it don't the cops have to issue it a number?

Wouldn't think you will find too many licensed dealers selling engines without numbers.

got some redex rust convertor in the shed and some moflo (acid based)
should i give these a go?
or would the blowtorch idea be a better bet?
oh and the letter i can c is x what could come b4 it?
all i know at the mo is it came out of a vl commodore
but its not the orginial motor
