Hey Guys,

i filled up at Shell today and noticed they have a new optimax out, Optimax Extreme iwth 5% ethanol. It has a 100 octane rating.

i was advised by the attendant at the desk that it should not be put in my car. They had a chart saying wat cars it would be fine in and it was only fine in the Fuel Enjected cars at holden ei Post 86.

But is this just for the fact that our cars were built for leaded anyway? And with the correct additive will be fine to use in my car? (like valve saver?)

Im just interested to try it out and see if i notice any difference..

Cheers Guys

Should be fine. I've been using 98RON Ethanol blend now for 18 months, no probs. I think your car is prolly out of warranty anyway. Just an ass covering exercise.

Anyone know the story about the old Optimax? Somebody did tell me, but can't recall the debacle.

On LS1.com.au there is a document showwing BP and Shell both were selling premium as 98 but when tested it only ranked 96. Caltex was the only major making 98, so I guess they have put out 100 to cover their asses.

Apparently cars will run on an octane 2 pts lower than specified anyway.
We ran our Focus Zetec which states Premium only on std unleaded and there was NO power difference and no pinging at all. Ran exactly the same.

And you wont notice it Mark, Modern EFI cars run knock sensors and computer controlled ignition retard to fix any hiccups. Bit different on a 1970 points car tho.

The ambient temp of the day will make a difference to the octane your car needs so if it was a cool day - you may get away with no pinging on a lower grade fuel. The manufacturers do also have a bit of a tolerance on this as fuels vary as mentioned above.

As for not noticing when an EFI engine retards the timing due to sensing a knock, if the knock is bad enough you will most definately feel the power loss.
For a slight knock you may not feel it.

If I try to give mine full blast on a day above 40 degrees C, she hits about 5,000 rpm, then pre-ignites, the controller then basically shuts the engine down until you lift the right foot, then it kicks in again.
