Hi Crew

Can anyone tell me what it will cost/costs them for club registration in QLD? I remember reading somewhere that it should only be arond the $200 mark but when you first convert to club rego they will try and sting you about $400, which they are, which is apparently incorrect. Any advice???

Also, if club rego doesnt go as planned, as in if I decide I want to drive the car a lot more, is it easy to convert back to full rego? You dont have to stuff around with roadworthys etc do you?

Thanks for the help

Cheers

Brett

G'day Brett,

A quick call to QLD Transport on 132380 and I found out the following.

SIV registration is $459-80 for 12 months. Obviously that is cheaper for 6 months (about half). The fee is that same if you are changing from normal rego to SIV rego or renewing SIV rego. This fee is based on an 8 cylinder vehicle. The rate is less for 4's and 6's.

I was under the impression that club rego was a lot cheaper myself but apparently it is not. Even so, it is half the cost of normal rego.

You can transfer back to normal registration at any time. You pay a pro-rata rate and will not be required to produce a safety certificate.

To obtain SIV registration you will need to be a member of an incorporated car club such as the Queensland Torana Car Club (which you are anyway).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Tony

Yeah I think where people differ is in the CTP section. Went to QLD Transport and yeah, is only $190..something. If I hadnt changed the CTP to class 5 (limited use) and left it at 1 it would still have been $459.80. So some people musnt realise this and still be paying nearly $500 for club rego.

SIV does mean special interest vehicle.

Rory, what CTP class is your car under? Its the check digit they ask for. Traditionally its 1 (which is why if you leave it at 1 the price will be $459) but on a SIV its usually 5 or sometimes 19 I think. Yeah the cost seems to be $192.05 with everything ive checked but lucky you I say, thats very cheap.

PS - in the time between I started the thread and now ive obviously done a lot of research on it :) Kinda weird how I started a thread and now im answering my own question but ahh well.

Restrictions in QLD are fairly lax for club rego. I have copied the following from the QLD Transport site.

Participating in rallies organised by incorporated car clubs;

Participating in processions for which a Special Events Permit has been issued under the
Transport Operations (Road Use Management Accreditation and Other Provisions)
Regulation 2005;

Exhibiting the vehicle in displays, fetes or similar functions conducted for religious,
charitable or educational purposes;

Ceremonial purposes (weddings, formals) involving immediate family members provided
this is not done for fee or reward. Immediate family means parents, grandparents, sons,
daughters, grandchildren but not extended family relationships such as nephews and nieces

Preparing for, proceeding to, and returning from the above activities;

Travel in order to have the vehicle repaired. There is no distance restriction in these
circumstances however such travel must be reasonable and openly justified by the vehicle
operator;

Road testing within a 15 kilometre radius from the place where the vehicle is garaged.
The purpose of the travel must be to road test the vehicle following repair or restoration
and not for any other purpose. This does not include use as a means of transport;

^^^ as long as you carry paperwork to prove that's where your going, saves a lot of arguing on the side of the road.

What about number plates? Can you have personalised/prestige plates or must you display the plate your issued with under SIV rego?

I'm a member of the Ipswich Classic and Muscle Car Club, I am very happy with this club as they are more flexible and friendly then some of the others around.

Thanks for researching further Brett. The guy I spoke to at QLD Transport quoted the $450 figure straight off the bat. Im sure others have been caught by this. I will be putting the UC on SIV rego this month so the info you have provided will make life alot easier.

Kev has raised some good points. Where possible, always carry the run sheet from your clubs newsletter with you. It helps sort out any problems with police folk who do not understand what SIV rego allows you to do. One of our members had a run in with the law recently on their way to Munchies and it took some convincing that their destination was valid for using a car on SIV rego. The thing that got them pulled over in the first place was their "S" rego plate (eg S-12345). The copper didnt recognise the format and he pulled them over as he thought it was unusual.

In my opinion it is a good idea to use personalised plates on SIV to minimise the chance of having to explain yourself when you are doing the right thing anyway. Your rego label will still look different but the plates will just blend in.

As a side note to the comment above ^. The QTCC has revamped the club requirements to qualify for SIV registration. These days all we ask for is 2 years membership up front to be eligible for SIV. Members who have been in the club for more than 12 months automatically qualify.

Good thread Brett, you have saved me a few hundred dollars :spoton:

^Nope. New members or those who have been with the club less than 12 months just have to pay an extra years renewal fee. Members for over 12 months automatically qualify. This opens up the possibility of regional members to join and reap the benefits of club membership. Seems to be working well as we now have a couple of people from Townsville who have joined.
