Hi just double checking my diagnosis, try to kick it over and its only a single click, battery is ok, the starter was working 2 weeks ago, untill i pulled the engine out and changed it. tried another starter and it has the same problem :fool:

starter has new 12mm positive lead and is reading 12v
ignition wire reads 12v when key is turned
the small braided wire from the solenoid to the starter only reads 1.5v when kicked
works fine when is bridged with screwdriver

my question is is it the solenoids? both of these starters were working fine 2 weeks ago. could there be any fault in the wiring?

get a jumper lead and connect the engine block to the negative of the battery and see if it works then.....but if

the small braided wire from the solenoid to the starter only reads 1.5v when kicked
works fine when is bridged with screwdriver

then it is the solenoid.

Well done on your fault finding...if eveyone did that well people like me would have more time to work on our own cars.

or grab the multi meter again an put + on the battery lead side of the solenoid and the - on the side with the small braided wire into the starter motor. get another person to try start it...this will give the voltage drop across the solenoid....if this comes up over 1 volt then the copper contacts and disc in the cap of the solenoid need cleaning and/or replacing.

Has this solenoid been bashed around?

ill give that a go in the morning, the one that was working has a crack in the cap, and the other was a spare that had had seen its fair share of being thrown into milk crates with other bits and peices.

If u say it works alrite when u short the starter over then possibly it could be a voltage drop problem in the wire running from the ign switch. Is it auto or manual because sometimes mainly auto have a problem as the inhibitor swithch loads up the circuit. to rectify the problem put a relay on the wire from the key. Trust me im an auto electrician apprentice. Solenoid cap repair kits can be bought for the bosch starter motor and are easy to fit if u have a soldering iron and a few basic tools. part number is GB900.

ucmego, i found out it was just a cap after 3 different starters, fiddling/replacing wires twice, and hooking up a relay.

im glad its fixed now. I love the new relay that i didn`t even need, seems to have much more grunt now

Dumb question, but what is the cap? The braided line from the solenoid to the starter?

the solenoid cap is the black plastic cover with two copper studs on it where the battery supply for the starter is connected and the pullin coil wire from the key is connected.
