Well after missing out on the GMH-Torana Forum drag day, a week later I finally got most of my problems sorted out, and got the beast up to Heathcote yesterday for the Eastside drag day...

It was a hectic couple of days getting it ready. Had to replace a head gasket which fixed my oil leak, then had to re-adjust the rockers etc, I got to bed at 4am, then back up again at 6:30am. The drive to Heathcote was going great until we started hearing a massive ticking noise (sounded like top-end rocker noise). Backed off and cruised, the noise was on and off a bit but settled down and we finally made it there. Off came the rocker covers but didn't find anything. Couldn't see anything else, and the car felt fine again, so I bit the bullet and threw her down the strip.

Started with a flat 12, and then ran three 11.9's, my best being an 11.91 @ 114mph. Deb also got her hands on the keys (first ever time racing it for her). Her first pass was a 13.4, then a 12.7, then a 12.5, and then finally as 12.2!!! Lucky she didn't keep going, I would have been toast.

In the Dial Your Own comp in the arvo Deb raced first in the ladies comp but got knocked out first round because she broke out by 3 tenths. I had my go next in the blokes comp, and after 3 passes made it to the final, eventually being the runner up (missed it by a few hundredths). So close!!!

The burnout comp was next, with 4 cars going totally nuts. But I decided to give it a miss with the motor still being so fresh and all...

So all in all it was a great day. A bit dissapointing for me, I really hoped the car was going to go a fair bit quicker than that, but it's still my new best time for Heathcote and it was over 30 degree's, so we'll venture out to Calder Park in the near future and see what we can do out there.

A few other highlights of the day for me - I got to race against Sean (Flamenco) in his mighty little machine - the Cappuccino. That was so cool. It was certainly getting a few interested looks. I think he managed a best of around 18seconds for the day, he'll be able to confirm...

After that I then strapped in as passenger with Tim (oldn64) and saw the master in action behind the wheel of the Galant. Bloody quick little jigger that thing!!! Felt surprisingly fast, but unfortunately it was running off the pace since last week. The new tramp bars seemed like they were working well, but we think the new diff was a taller ratio which possibly hurt the times... Cath also strapped herself in for a blast down the quarter (I believe it was her first ever time racing), and did an absolutely fantastic job behind the wheel. She eventually ran a quicker time than Tim himself, hehehe, but I think he may have re-claimed that in his very last pass?? I can't remember the exact times... But well done Cath, awesome job!

Some other neat stuff from the day included a whole mix of real neat, high horsepower drag cars - a few low, mid, and high 11 sec cars running, plus stacks of everything from 12's to low 20's. A combi van with a Subaru engine managed to crack off a 17sec pass. A couple of rotaries in the 11's too.

If any of the pics turn out, I'll post a few up when I get the chance...

Happy to be back on the road!!!!

Cheers
LXCHEV.

Congratulations mate, thats real good news!! Good for you to finally get it up there and running after all the hard work trying to get it ready and the stress of added dramas and problems. 11.9 is a good first outing time considering its only got a couple of hundred k's on the clock. Once it gets a bit looser it will rev out freer and you'll be able to re-tune it a bit leaner perhaps and see improvements. Does it make power any higher up the revs than the old motor?

Cheers,

Hey all,

well i think youve said everything pysically possible in that post babe!!

The day was awesome, its safe to say im now addicted to drag racing!!

Brett to you realise what you have done by introducing me to this sport? Well after last week i didnt think i could top it, specially seeing how i got my eh to go my fastest time and doing a ripper skid at the end of the day, what could beat that? well nothing really but driving bretts car certainly came even.

For those who know us, you'd know i love bretts rana, and every now and then drive it, ive given it a bit at shep on skid pan and on the streets but never mashed it fully.

So i got brett to come out with me on my first couple passes, now unlike my eh where i just strap myself in hit the line locker switch and then hit the peddle, in bretts car its all about a special sequence, there is about 5 switches to flick, just to start the bloomen car, and on sat i got to add one more, his line locker, hehe.

It certainly is a huge adrenaline rush, going from a 16 second car to an 11 second car. My first run as he said was a 13, man it felt soo fast i wanted to back off. I wasnt scared as such, just that natural instinct in my body saying, hello your going a tad to fast, better slow down. so brett told me to go harder the next time and i did, but wanted to do it on my own, so kicked him out the car and gathered more confidence.

After my first pass i was seriously shaking, my legs went to jelly and my heart was going nuts, so thankfully by the end i was more relaxed and in control.

at the last minute i decided to go in girls dial your own, this is one part of drag racing i tend to pych myself out of, i always red light my first pass. So up i went, and i actually didnt red lit, woo hoo. I went as hard as i could, but when i got back found out i had broke out, dreading that i had actually gone slower i was amazed to find out id gone faster!!! man that put a smile on my face.

So after one day of racing i managed to get my time down to a time brett was only doing a year ago. So im wrapped with that. I cant wait to improve my times and give him some serious competition.

And one last thing that made my day was joanne from heathcote raceway has asked to photograph me and my beast (eh) for a heathcote calender, they want to have real drag racing chics!! so wrapped to be asked to be apart of that amongst some other chics i know.

ive made a pack that if i ever beat bretts times, then he has to hand over his car into my name, hehe, but with conditions, he still has to spend his money on it, hehe and fix it for me. lol

well i cant wait for another drag meet now!!!

brett , your going to have to lose weight to keep in front of debs times lol
she's lighter than you !

if it was me i would be putting some "old " plugs in before handing the car over lol

sounds like the EH might be getting a V8 transplant soon eh deb?

great to hear you guys had a great time, especially after the hassles with your engine

cheers

FANTASTIC MATE!!!! that's a good result for a first test run with a fresh motor. :spoton:
That's one fast machine and it should crack some early 11's later on with some 'tweaking'.
It's good to see fast Torry's out there kickin ass

lol brett lose weight, he's a twig!! lol.

I hope i can get his car to go faster, maybe if we had some more traction on the day and also maybe less fuel, silly boy had like 70litres in the thing, lol. be interesting to see what times it could do. and yeah im with you guys i wreckon maybe once its run in more it should run better. soo far its just been rush rush rush to do everything, and i think brett was probably babying her a little subconciously.

Well done to both of you!! :spoton:
You guys have been working so hard to get LXCHEV back on the road, and to have both of you do such great times is just fantastic.
Early days still i'm sure on a cool night with some good traction LXCHEV will take you faster than you have ever been before.

Good on ya mate for getting the beast on the road again. I bet you were spewing to have to repair an oil leak.

A new set of sticky tyres will do wonders. Just get out there and test and tune it every chance you get. See you at the easternats!

Cheers for all the comments. I think it's definitely going to be interesting to see how much it frees up once I get a few thousand k's on the clock.

Liam - the new combo still makes power in the same areas I think. It peaks up around 6200rpm, which feels about the same as the old combo - perhaps the new one does feel a bit more powerful up high though...

YiriSS - I think you've made a good point there mate - I better get on a diet and lose some weight, I can't have Deb running quicker than me. I also like the idea of putting some old plugs in!! hahahaha. By the way mate, whenever we end up going out to Calder I'll be sure to let you know, we'll have to catch up out there 4 sure.

TORANR AMORE - Cheers mate! Torrie's kick ass no matter what they're doing, but it's always nice to go faster and faster!!

253ToranaSS - Good old homework hey dude! Damn! Spewing you couldn't make it, but I'm so stoked to hear you've got the drag racing bug!! Will happily take Maddy out for a spin anytime. And yes, also looking forward to a cruise sometime soon!

knoath - So you're saying that maybe married life quarrels will be settled by a grudge race or something!?? hahaha could get interesting! LOL.

Tiny - Yeah I believe the new pipes are actually holding back some of the power. The Tri-Y's have 2.5" collectors. It's interesting, my engine builder said I should have 3.5" collectors!!!! Perhaps something to look into a bit further down the track...

LhMusL - The day I run quicker than 11.77 (if it ever happens), will be a huge highlight that's for sure! It's gonna be a whole lot of fun trying!! Maybe one day we'll reel off a side-by-side 11 sec run against each other!

LX406 - Yeah it was a major bummer to have to fix the oil leak, but it was just a freak gasket problem. Glad it's fixed now. As for tyres, I was running on Saturday with brand new Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials. Plenty of grip there, I didn't even have to let the tyre pressures down. The 275's fit, just! Will catch you at Easternats for sure!

As for pics and video's, I haven't had any spare time yet, but Heathcote have now put up lots of pics from the day on their website. There's a heap of cool cars and some great shots, I even got in there a couple of times!!

Check out:

Congrats on the times Brett. Haven't been online much these days so wasn't aware you were doing some work on the Beast. It's always good to go quicker when you've done some more work on the car. Once again well done. Looking forward to some pics. I have withdrawl symptoms not having a car to race anymore (Ah the good old days).

Here's some pics that Brett (and Deb?) took & emailed me from the day. (Hope you don't mind me posting them up Brett!).
It was a lot of fun going up against Brett in my tiny car - 0.657 litres compared with his 383! I had the head start because I was in a much slower bracket but I looked like I was standing still when LXCHEV flew past me! :D

Yeah Tim took those pics with our camera. We had a great race hey Sean! 0.657 litres versus 6.3 litres!!!! From memory I think you had a 7 second head start? Great fun, you gotta love it!

I reckon you did well getting the little Cappo into the 17's though! Next time we'll chuck my engine into yours and run 9's :)

PS. I am aiming to have a sh*tload of photos from the day up within the next week on the eastside website. Will let you know when it happens. I'm getting slack in my old age (actually, just more and more busy).... ahhh to have free time again!!!
