This is a 56 Chevy hood support that l had partially submerged in a molasses bath for the last week. The surface rust has almost completely gone after just a quick rinse off. l had a similar result with a rusty sump pan which came up clean after two weeks. The solution used is 1 part molasses to 5 parts water mixed in a large plastic tub. Looks and smells awful, but rips the rust off a treat.

I used stuff called "DE-OX-IT" on the weekend, you can water it down or use it as is.

Scotchbrite pad and a tub of it, dip the pad, then scrub the rust, comes off really easy and treats any sections that dont want to come off.

Wash it down with wet rag, then dry off with dry rag.

wait 15 minutes, go over with spray bottle of metho and a rag, then wash+dry again.

Got rid of all the surface rust on the bare metal sections on the ute!

The only problem with the top method is that once it comes out of the bath, it will oxidize really quickly. So when you pull it out, deal with it immediately.

where did you get that de-ox-it crap OrangeLJ? supercheap?
I'm way keen for some as long as it just EATS the rust and doesn't CONVERT it. I'll be painting it with POR-15.. it prefers no rust to real rust to converted rust :P.

I don't think it dissolves rust, but it seals rusted metal from oxygen and moisture. You still gotta remove the surface rust. They recommend (of course) their Metal Ready product.. (which I have but haven't used it yet) apparently it neutralises surface rust and etches metal for better POR adheasion.

I got it from a paint supply joint.

It helps eat off the surface rust and any close to the top stuff, but will convert anything thats a bit too hard to scrub out.

POR15 Metal Ready is a Phosphoric acid based rust dissolver and etch. POR15 Metal Ready is one of many products made by the company POR15 which is best known for its rust preventative paint. It is similar to K&H Rust Dissolver and Ranex which are also Phosphoric acid based.

This is a panel that has been treated with POR15 Metal Ready.

I used Marine Clean on all my door mechanisms and some other bits and pieces when I restored my FC.

As above, very good product.

Do you guys know of any product good for removing rust spots (quite alot) on chrome bumpers. I just want to make it a look a bit better and have them rechromed later

Any acid that disolves rust will work.

Just dip a soft cloth in it and use it to polish them out then rinse throughly.

Remember if there are tiny bits of rust getting trapped in the cloth then these will scratch te chrome, remove loose stuff first.

i'd try these before going the acid based route
