I rang Holden the other day after hearing they issue letters of authenticity and bam within 3 days I received a letter from them (which is bloody fantastic).
The part that has confused me is they have said my car is a 1976 SS Coupe. I had always thought my car was a 77 and on the tag on the left side of the engine bay has 4/77 on it. Part of the letter from Holden says "Please note the above information reflects an example of one of our original build 1976 LX Torana SS coupes. However, this reflects the 'as built' state of the vehicle, according to the VIN provided. Not sure if this basically means that they are referring to all hatches which began from 76 onwards.
So what I'm curious to know is how can I confirm what year my car was made. Could the letter from Holden just be general referring to all hatchbacks (despite all the other details being specific about the car i.e. trans, diff, etc) or could my car be a 76 not 77? I have done searches on VIN numbers and stuff and all the details are fine but I'm just wanting to confirm the year. I'll scan a copy of the letter when I get home and post it.
My VIN is 8D77LGJ582308X
Thanks and all the best!

Got my letter from Holden

Hi
I can't say I am an expert - but to my understanding, the G in the VIN indicates 1977 build (I think they goofed in your letter). The other bit about "as built state" etc. is their way of saying that VIN indicates such and such, but that doesn't mean that that is what you have. ie. get an expert to check that the car is the genuine artilcle don't rely on the VIN alone. That is a standard phrase in all their certification letters. I reckon that they have a 'form' letter and have forgotten to change the 1976 to a 1977 before they sent it.
Get them to send another one. There should be a phone number somewhere on the letter.
Cheers

Well I had done all the searches and thought it was 77 so as Bazza said maybe just a typo from Holden. I'll ring Holden on monday and see what they say. For some reason I felt funny when I read the letter and thought wow the car I thought I knew had changed. I told my mate at work and said it was the same equivilent that if he found out his son (who just turned 1) had actually turned 2 instead. He didnt find the comparison relevant. I agreed and said yea you're right the car is more important. Once again he disagreed.

The model year runs from Sept to August so a '76 model year car was built between Sept '76 and August '77, so your letter is correct.

I have a Melb assembled panno recorded J584170 as 7/77, its just another Holden letter stuff up written by someone who doesnt understand what they are reading or the details were wrongly recorded in the first place, I wouldnt worry too much.
James the 77 model year runs from 9/76 to 8/77 dealers dont like selling last years cars

As Leroy says, don't put any faith in a Holden letter. They are worth about 1% of the time taken to get one. It's the same as ringing up Philips and asking them about a TV set they made in the 70's. You'll be speaking to someone who wasn't even born, whoever writes the letter has less idea than Kevin Rudd and no-one who cares would even see your request. Judging by how many mistakes I've seen on these letters you are better off without one. Basic mistakes like your plates say R for 253, and they tell you it's an L33 low comp engine, even though the BODY plate says L32, and the build records would also tell them it was an L32. Plus all they can do is look up the PSN. They have no idea about BODY or chassis numbers and if what you have matches.
