I'm doing a quick freshen up of our little runabout TD, the motor is tired and I want to give it some extra get up and go.

I've never really had much to do with the little Gemmy's so any tips/tricks/advice at all would be great.

Im planning on keeping the original motor to keep things simple. Basic plan is to freshen up the bottom end, get the head ported and shaved for some extra compression, mild cam, 32/36 Weber (got one today), extractors (got some today) and a nice exhaust.

Is there anything in particular that works well with these engines? Is it worth the hassle to go a bigger engine? (2L Gemini/Rodeo etc)

Its just going to be a tidy daily driver, aiming to keep it reliable too. What kind of HP gain over a standard tired motor would I gain? What size exhaust would be best? 2.25"?

The whole car is getting a make over including brakes, suspension, paint and interior. Yeeha!! I'll start a post in members projects in a week when it gets pulled apart.

I've had heaps of gemini's 1.6 , 1.8. 2.0 in all different combinations.

The best one was 2L Gemini/Rodeo with 1.6 head, mild cam extractors webber carby, This combination was quicker then my commodore vs v6 and reliable.

2-1/4" exhaust sounds like overkill. Should get a better sound and adequate flow from a good 2" system.

^ what they said, you can stick with the 1.6 or go the 2.0 if you can rego it.
Mods suggested wil work well.

Yeah, throw the Weber on a 2L Rodeo engine. A mate of mine did that to his TD and it went like stink! I don't think it was a hassle to put in, either, and registerable...and his dad was a Federal copper  .
G'day Johnno, if you're out there!

Deffinately go for a 2L over a 1.6L if you can, or even a 1.8L the extra torque means alot for the lil Gemini.

2L also have a much better chain tensioner (steel not plastic which always break) But they can also be retrofitted to a 1.6L if your set on using a 1.6.

But yea 2L with a 1.6L head to up compression, Double row timing chain for reliability, A little bit of head porting if your budget allows it will go a long way, dont go too crazy with the cam or you will lose all your bottem end (my old 1.8 didnt get up and boogey till 4000rpm was abit annoying unless ya were thrashin it) Twin Webers is deffinately a good choice, can pick up a full setup in good nick for around $700 or can set up EFI for around $1500-2000 for all the electronic bonus's

2 1/4" exhaust is what I was recommended.

Depends how much you wanna spend really and what you want from the car.

My G180 (1.8L) Made 90rwhp with those few mods (just a single 32/36 carb) and ran a 16 second pass with a open center diff (very poor take-off) I later fitted a 2.3L (4ZD1) which was standard and made around 110rwhp and ran a 15.6 with a locked diff and now ive got a Turbo bolted on making near 200rwhp and will be hitting the drags next wednesday!

Yep, 2.0L Rodeo engine or a Piazza turbo engine. I think Jackeroos had a 1.8 or 2.0L too.
