G'day all,
Does anyone have any suggestions on removing old window tinting?
Boy #2 needs to remove it from his VS.
Is there a way to remove it without damaging the rear screen demister?

Roodog has suggested using a heatgun to remove the tint, then white spirits to remove the glue.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

I used a nice sharp razor blade, the thin double edge ones that open you up if your not careful,to get under the edge , a squirt bottle ful of metho and water, and paper towels.

A shithouse job if ever there was one.

handy hint; dont chew your nails before you start. You will need them.

I found the metal back blades were scratching the glass.Thats why I resorted to the old Wilkinson Sword blades of death.

Well, they tell you not to use an ammonia base glass cleaner to clean tinted windows. So I'm tipping that a cleaning product high in ammonia would be beneficial in removing tint.

Also maybe use a heat gun or hair dryer, if you have one handy, to help melt the glue of the tint. Should make it easier to peel from the window.

Ugh! Worst job in the world. I managed to get it off all the windows with a detergent solution and razor (very bloody slowly - detergent mix in spray bottle makes it slippery much like when you're applying it) but spent weeks trying to get bits of glue residue, ended up having to take it to a tinter to have it cleaned - for the time, & cost of all the crap I tried it would've been cheaper to just get another rear window as Craig mentioned.

Good luck - don't envy you.

One of the dealerships I worked at used to get Sol-ace or Tint a car in to retint
a bunch of used cars at a time. I watched them once when I did a stint in Pre-delivery.
They used to lightly cut/score the tint & place a nozzle from a steamer at the bottom
so the steam rose against the vertical tint surface, then after a bit just peeled the
tint off. The steamers they used looked like the ones on the home shopping thing for
cleaning your grout & stuff but spose a wallpaper steamer would be just as good.
never tried it meself but looked quite easy.

Cheers Jono

Steam is the best way.
When I was tinting this was how we would do the back window.
Then hit it with some glue remover and a soft scotchbrite.
Just make sure the back seat and parcel shelf gets covered.

Would a wallpaper steamer do the job?

We had a little win.
I borrowed a steamer, but it wouldn't work.
Fortunately the old tint peeled off in 1 piece. :)
The boy is doing battle with the glue today. I wish him the best of luck. lol
Thanks to all for your suggestions.
