HQ-WB say "Coupe utility" on ADR plate of the 80 body style (ute), so are they a coupe too?

Still a hatch to me. Just like an LC/LJ coupe being a coupe even if it's classed as a "2-door sedan"

I call my SS a Hatchback but on some forms for show 'n Shines it is classed as Coupe but referring back to what has just been said, yes there were stuff-ups at the factory and this letter from an ex Acacia Ridge Assembly Plant worker confirms it.

Hatchback or Coupe it really doesn't matter to me just as long as I can drive it :spoton:

My flat mate had a XB panelvan with 4dr id tags. That had the D.O.T. guy scratching his head!

I thought coupe= 2 doors?
I wonder when the term 'hatchback' was originally coined?

As far as im concerned a Hatch is a car where the rear "hatch" lifts and has direct access to the cabin, where as a Coupe is a 2-door version of the 4-door and has a seperate boot from the cabin.

The bit you lift on the back of a torana is called a "hatch" or "hatch lid" etc never heard anyone refer to it as a boot lid...

In the LX and UC parts books, the Body Style Code 77 is referred to as a "Hatchback Coupe"..

For clarification, that ^ is opposed to a Hatchback Sedan commonly called a five-door. Pity no Torana's fall into this category. :P

LC/J are a 2dr sedan due to the space inside - i.e. five full seats. If the rear roofline dropped, then they would probably be a coupe, which should only seat a max of four (2+2 configuration) or usually just 2 seats.

i thought the difference between the 2door sedan and coupe thingy had to do with the silhouette or shape of the 2door car compared to the 4 door, that if the 2door shape/silhouette was the same as the 4door it was a 2door sedan, but if the silhouette was slightly different ie slightly more slope at the rear then what a 4 door had, then it was a coupe.
the lc/ljs 2doors have the same silhouette as the 4 doors hence them being a 2 door sedan.
look at thje hktg monaros. the silhouette is different between the 4doors and the 2doors thats why they are coupes.
i hope thats correct.

From the books..

Body Style number 11: Two Door Sedan
Body Style number 69: Four Door Sedan
Body Style Number 77: Hatchback Coupe
Body Style Number 70: Panelvan
Body Style Number 80: Ute
Body Style Number 19: Statesman

not too sure what the Monaro's are.

cheers
Mick

That makes sense with the 2-door sedan vs coupe thing regarding the silhouettes

The original French meaning of coupe is a 2-door version of a 4 door sedan.

Therefore GTR's and Monaro's are coupes but Corvettes or Mustangs aren't.
I guess since the LJ shares the silhouette then they can also be called 2 door sedan since that is exactly what they are.

Being a coupe doesn't mean it can't also be a Hatchback, since they are describing 2 different parts of the car.

Therefore Holden are correct to call them Hatchback Coupes - they have a hatch entry to the cabin and they are a 2 door version of a 4 door sedan.

I was just looking around on the net and found that SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) defines a coupe as having less than 33cu ft of rear space - regardless of the number of doors or seats.

So therefore you can have a 4 door coupe or a 2 door sedan - depending on how big either of them are in the rear. Or a 5 door hatchback coupe, or 3 door hatchback sedan Posted Image

Lost in the translation? :dontknow:

It would be interesting to know what other dictionaries say but the Heinemann Australian dictionary says coupe' = "An enclosed motor car with 2 doors"

Maybe - but coupe in French means "to shorten" - nothing to do with the number of doors. And I would take SAE definition as gospel - since they are the gospel.

Ha! Ha! Gospel in America maybe.............. :)
All you have to do is look at how technical a Detroit is and that will tell you about the Standards of American Engineers.
