I know it's not technically electrical as it's a mechanical gauge but most gauge questions are in here.
I've just put a celica gearbox in my vh, which doesn't have switchable cogs like the old 5 speed and the m20 have, just a set ratio speedo drive. I'm just wondering if it's possible to re-calibrate the speedo somehow (I'm sure I've read something about changing the springs inside) and where I could get this done in nsw if possible?
Cheers
Chris

They do have changeable gears in much the same manner, just not so obvious. The other issues are that Toyota charges a small fortune for them, and you may not find one to suit if you have a tall diff.
It is possible to alter the VDO speedos simply by adjusting the spring setting/initial load but that generally results in non-linear changes so the speedo won't be accurate throughout the speed range.

You can get the spring tension altered to recalibrate the speedo however the odometer will be inaccurate. Another method is fit a ratio box between the gearbox and the speedo to correct the error. This method also corrects the odometer. The CRS box is $128 plus cables. You should find most instrument workshops would be able to supply a ratio box.

Hmm I think I'd prefer the odometer to be accurate on the off chance I sell it. The diff is 3.36 so it isn't tall, I suppose it depends what toyota want for the gears and how hard it is to change them. Would I be right in thinking a ratio box would need a cable either side of the box? If so where would I get the cables?

Sometimes the ratio box can be fitted directly to the speedo or gearbox. If not then you mount the ratio box somewhere along the speedo cable.
Flexible Drive Agencies and CRS can make speedo cables.
Flexible Drive Agencies list the ratio boxes as drive joints. Flexible Drive Agencies would probably be the cheapest supplier.

Thanks for that, the site looks like it'll be exactly what I'm looking for. I've just ordered a speedo cable for it off ebay so I'll be able to test the speedo and odometer probably on monday.
