Winton track is out of the ballpark price wise for a days hire on weekends and the only vacancy is middle of winter anyway, BUT they have 2 "fun days" this year. This involves $25 for the day but limited racing. (I spoke to a mate who has done this and he got 2 x 8 laps over the day) The dates are Sun 16th July and Sun 17th Dec. The restrictions are similar to Heathcote, e.g. leather footwear, overalls and approved helmet. There is also mention of bonnet restraints which I would have to have clarified. How much interest? I reckon possibly more racing in July due to lower turn up but better weather in Dec.
Check www.wintonraceway.com.au, then calendar (on the left column) then scroll to AutoBrakes fun day for details.
Winton is on the Hume Hwy Vic. 15ish k's North of Benalla.

Over the last probably 3 years I have done several of these days, they are great fun.

They usualy have 3 a year, one very early on around Australia day, one in the middle of the year, and one just before christmas.

When i raced i had no problems with bonnet restraints using the factory bonnet latch. I had a Coke bottle as overflow bottle.

When I went to the Janurary one this year, because of the heat (35 degrees) it was pretty quiet but plenty of oppertunities to get out there. Had a blast.

Heres a snap of me at the August 2004 Fun Day

Thanks for your input Steve and also the pics!
Could you give more details as in how many laps approx did you do for the day? How many stints? How long between stints? Were the the cars evenly matched or classed per stint? Any info would be appreciated from someone who has been to one of these.

Basicaly the day starts with scruntineering and a drivers brief at 9am (it maybe 10am i just can't remember which it is :fool: ) After that the track is opened.

Cars need to be roadworthy, with no loose objects inside, and steering and braking systems and brake lights need to be in good working order. Also cars need to be free of leaks (or degreased in my case ;)) and have an overflow bottle Drivers need to have full covering neck to wrist and ankles, and covered shoes and a proper helemet. Flame resistant clothing is recommended.

The sessions run in 30 minute blocks. The first is for drivers only (no passengers) the second session is for Drivers and passengers only (no drivers without passengers). They swap between these two for the whole day. The only exception is a Driver and junior passenger session around 1pm, where drivers can take their older children for a lap out in there cars behind the pace car.

Generaly they let up to 40 cars on the track at a time (full circuit) letting them on from the pits. As cars come off, others are allowed on. They do not class cars, or match them based on performance, so it means there is a real mix of different speed cars on the track, but everyone is told to be aware who is around them and give others room. Those who are faster and need to pass people are told to do it ONLY ON STRAIGHTS.

Basicaly the ruling on how fast you go is:

You are only allowed to drive to 80% of the car and the drivers potentional, it is NOT racing as such, simply doing laps.

If you driver harder than this (drifting, tyres squealing around corners etc) you will be given a warning, and if you do this again you will be kicked out.

In all the fun days I have been to (somewhere around 6 or 7) I only know of one fender bender where someone ran into the back of someone (no injuries), and one blown motor (bye bye Gen III  ). I think this is a great event and great oppertunity for people to experience circuit racing for a cheap cost.

Most of the time I would go out and do maybe 3 or 4 or 5 laps in a row and come back in, since my car is a daily and i don't want to cook or brake anything. I usually do that a couple of times in the day, depending on how aggressive or not the other drivers are, how my car is running, etc

Hope this given you guys an idea what goes on on these days. :spoton:

Another option is to enter the PIARC (Phillip Island Auto Race Club) sprints at Phillip Island. You need to join a club and buy a Cams Level 2 licence (can do this on the day). Cost to enter is about $140 per day.
The saturday is for practice and you generally get 5 or 6 - 15 minute sessions.
Sunday is the supersprint day where they time your laps and you can earn points toward your club championship. Again you get 5 or 6 sessions depending on the number of entries, each sessions consist of a warm up lap, 3 timed flying laps and a slow down 1/2 lap.
Theres usually a few Toranas on the Sunday. Check out the website www.piarc.com.au for more details.
