Where's the best places to go to buy billet axles?? How much $$$$? Which brands? I've heard good things about Moser and Mark Williams axles, any others worth investigating too???
Any feedback would be great.
PS. I'm in Vic, but that doesn't mean I couldn't deal interstate if it came down to it.
At the moment my 9" has a 28 spline centre. I'm looking to upgrade the axles to 31 spline, which would mean I'd also have to get the centre upgraded too (mini spool).

Oh a topic im know well.. for the wrong reasons.
LxChev .... if you got the extra cash do it the way i did it.
Middle last year i blew the crap out of my 9 inch.. 28 spline axles.. twisted.... Sold the centre to Tiny so he can testify the damage LOLOL.Yes the little rotary makes a little HP at the wheels ) .
I looked at rebuilding the 28 spline but.. i would run into the same problems once get traction. I looked at 31 spline and was going to go that way... buyt i found out for the same price to convert centre and axles i could get 35 spline!
BUT to run 35 spline you need to run ball bearings axles not the tapered style bearings in plain man language Large serials bearings.. so if you get tapered bearings on axles then you need to get it modify to accdept 35 spline axles.
Anyway i ended up buying 35 spline billet axles ... 3.9 full spool with aluminum centre and 1350 yoke.by memory all up it cost like 4000 plus 700 for new 3.5 tailshaft with 1350 stainless stell yokes... basically the rear end will cope with 1000hp if ever i get that much HP .. its bloody bulletproof now!.... If you going to keep the car then its the way to go ... oh btw its Moser gear as well.. all imported from the states and has a 10 year guratee not to break !

go see hugo i got mine about 2 months ago cost $750.00 for a pair of moser. that was for 28 spline. 28 spline upto 35 spline theres no price differance.

ive heard good things about moser too, and its what im using in my diff setup. Last i checked they were about $900!
31 spline shoud be enough, moser state that these axles can take up to 7000ft lbs of torque!

Lostit - very interesting reading all that mate! The setup you have now sounds like the absolute bees knees!!! I don't think you're gonna break that gear in a hurry! A bit out of my price range right now though. But next time I build up a complete 9" setup from scratch, I reckon that's the way I'll go... (for my next tough car)....
Anyway, had an interesting day today - showed some diff guys my current 28 spline axles. I always thought they were Ford axles, but it turns out they are standard Holden axles (one is a shortened Salisbury axle, the other is a resplined one-tonner axle). These axles have been in my car for approx 6-7 years now, and have done a lot of hard work with the mini spooled centre, with 265 rear tyres. One still looks brand new, the other one is showing signs of some twisting (but should still be quite alright they reckon)....
Ended up biting the bullet though and ordered a pair of brand new 31 spline billet Mosers through Supa Trik Engineering (he was placing his monthly order with them tonight), so it seemed like perfect timing. With brand new bearings and seals, it is costing me $790 all up. I'm supplying the wheel studs, and retainer plates.
If I had of read this a bit earlier, I could have spoken to Hugo, but it's around the same price anyway. I'm keen to get the new axles now, I reckon it's a great price for something that is custom made in the USA, should have them in the car in a couple of weeks time.
Like Lostit also mentioned - I also found out that to go bigger than 31 spline, you can no longer run tapered style bearings. So for now, I'm happy to go with the 31's, and I'm also sticking with a mini spool (swapping my 28 spline one over to a 31 spline. Will get out of the whole thing for under a grand.
PS. makka - HAHAHAHAHA cleared the credit card???? No way dude, it's still hurting really badly actually. I'm thinking of putting some things on Ebay to try to pay for these axles! It's gonna take me a few more months to recover from all the recent expenses.

Awesome... now that you refreshed my memory , thats the place i ordered mine through as well ..Andrew is his name top bloke and explains things clearly .
Yeah its a bit steep the price for the things i brought but i thought about it and got sick of buying half ass things and repeating the same buying execrise 1 year down the track ... if you get my meaning. Needless even 31 spline moser axles will withstand more abuse then yourll be able to throw at them.. unless of course you will division 1 in tatts ) .
As for your old axles.. i used to run the same combo in my VB commodore salisbury axles fit nicely in ford 28 spline centres and the drivers side is shorter.
Anyway good luck on the axles !

If you want MW go see Dr Terry or go see VPW if you want Strange axles, both these guys are priced right.

Yep, his name is Andrew, seems like a real good bloke. Had plenty of time for me yesterday, explaining heaps of things and giving me his opinion and thoughts on heaps of stuff. A few of my mates have had diff and axle work done through him in the past and everyone has been really happy with both his quality and service.
He was telling me if you want good axles, the 3 big names are Moser, Mark Williams, and Strange. He has been a dealer for Moser for 12 or 13 years now I think he said.
LS1LX - There's lots of info on their website here: www.moserengineering.com
If you go into the axle section - it's quite interesting, you can input the torque of your engine, your driveline gearing (ie. 1st gear ratio and diff ratio), and it calculates the maximum torque your car will put to the ground. Then cross-check this with their list to see which axles are most suited. As an example, their 31 spline axles are rated to handle 7,000 ft. lbs. per axle!!! That is massive.
Also from their website: "We begin with premium quality alloy steel that is forged in Moser designed tooling, induction heat-treated to optimize torsional strength, and then 100% magnafluxed". Does that answer your question? Kinda sounds like they are still a forged axle to me??

I've had Moser 31 spline axles in mine for over 3 years, with alot of abuse no problems so far. They cost me $750 3 years ago so they have'nt gone up in that time.

There induction hardened, still have a soft centre, just a forged axle, for a few hundred more buy "billets", thru-hardened (hard centre).

Runing Suregrip slipery with steel hemisphere, grenaded the 10 bolt about four years ago and spent a few bucks (too many) on a bullit proof rear with crome molly tailshaft and billet yolks ect.
