Could anybody explain to me why some rear swaybars are mounted to the lower control arms and others are mounted on to the body and u-bolted to the diff. I read somewhere that one is for disc brake rear ends is this so?

The de-coupled style (mounted to the body) are more effective than the factory style that mounts to the lower control arms.

This might be a stupid question BUT is the sway bar really important to have?? I just put a 9 inch diff in about 2 weeks ago and it was hitting the sway bar, so my boyfriend took it off, even though i told him several times not to!!! :furious: anyway, he said that its not important to have on there; and my only comeback was that - if it wasnt important, why was it invented?? Can someone pls let me know if i should put it back on or not or if i should get a new one that would possibly fit around the 9 inch. Thanks :D

p.s - sorry wellsyhatch for asking a question thats not really related to your post...

Thats all right. A neighbour of mine just purchased a hatch from victoria and was knocked back for a blue slip for not having a front or rear swaybars.

thats crap .... i dunno about the LX's but the LH's came from the factory with no swaybars at all!!

as for having one on the rear, it will help with body roll, but its not critical .... the front bar usually does the majority of the work anyways for the body roll

Knocked back for blue slip? Sounds odd.

As far as I know only SLR's and SS's had sway bars as factory.
(maybe GPac too, oh and A9X's)

Not sure if you could option it?

Its not as if it is a high priority safety device. Its a performance
enhancer, and not really that bigger difference in handling,
as far as factory sway bars went. After markets were better.

As for being knocked back for not having one....sounds like crap to me!
The majority of LH's and LX's did not have sway bars at all!

Tell your mate to go back and demand a second look! and a free look at that.

Cheers, Leakey

I thought that on LH, a rear bar was standard and a front bar was on V8s and all SLRs. All RTS cars had front and rear bars with the UC getting the decoupled type on the rear.

As far as whether you need one or not, if you can't tell the difference without it, it might not have been having much effect on your driving style.

i remember taking my front one off, for a little while, the difference in handling was noticable straight away.......so i quickly put it back on.

dont know if the rear one makes a difference but the front one certainly does.....

Thrash it around a circuit and I'm sure you'll notice the difference. As Mick said it's all about your driving style, it works in direct relation to the movement in the suspension. If the vehicle stays pretty much flat around the corner, then the sway bar isn't actually doing anything. If you're flat out around bends then the sway bar will get some serious forces acting on it and only then will it do what it's made to do.

RTS wasn't specifically designed to only work properly with a swaybar on or anything. It's not detrimental

If I needed to remove one for sump clearance etc. I'd check out Whiteline (?) front-mounted swaybars or something similar to that.

I honestly hadn't even heard of these UC rear bars. Can they only be fitted to the small Salisbury housing? Pics would be great if someone has them.

RTS cars onwards have sway bars standard, front and rear, my sunbird 4 banger even had them.

LH's pretty sure it was an SL/R thing to have a rear bar and optional on others. There a mix n match car the old holdens. No set standards.

when i put my boarg warner in, my LX sway bar would not fit, took it to wilco's and they got a whiteline one that would fit. it is a body mounted one. i think it come from a falcon for meamory. i noticed a huge differance in body roll and an overall increase of tightness of the handeling.

I have an ex drag UC that was registered in ACT and NT without any sway bars...its definately getting a front bar but I don't know about one fitting on my 9 inch....I am sure it will get knocked for rego when it presents in NSW if I don't have one.

That's not correct. LH SL/R's, G-Paks all had sway bars. Don't know if there is an LH S, but the LX S also had sway bars standard, in addition to SS, and SL/R and of course A9X.

EDIT: Sway bars where fitted from factory are front and rear.

Just pulling the LX S apart to rebuild, and noticed that there is also a small coupled sheet metal coupled crush tube inside each trailing arm. Things you learn.

Also, remember boys and girls, never jack your car up by the trailing arms, or they end up banana shape like on this car.

Well fancy that! I had to go out and check whether my LX S had a rear sway bar because I could never recall seeing it before. But sure enough, lower control arm mounted sway bar.

How do sway bars go on a 'drag car'? Seeing as you're not throwing it around like in Heaths example are they not necessary, or do they help with rigidity and keeping the car straight. I suppose a watts linkage or panhard bar would get in the way of a rear sway bar anyway...
