Restarting an engine after it has been idle for years

My LC has original 2600 engine with around 60 000 original miles on the clock & was in very good condition when pulled of the road for a resto. It has sat idle for many years now,
Is it possible to re-use engine or will it need reconditioning before it can be restarted again? Will I have to renew fuel lines etc. & will the fuel tank need to be treated before re use? Is there
any way of telling if a complete overhaul is needed?Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,

pullung the head off, checking the bores for rust, and oiling the bores a bit, pulling the sump, one by one pulling the main bearing and big end caps off and re oiling the bearings, pulling the oil pump and packing it with vaso, suirting the cam with some oil wont hurt either. Crank the engine with the plugs out and coil disconnected until you have oil presssure, then start it up
and as your doing this you will notice whather there is any damage to the bores/bearings
I would also be cleanining out the tank and flushing the fuel lines at a bare minimum

For both replies,I'll be putting in a new motor/gearbox in the near(ish) future & I haven't decided if I'm going to run original set up for a while before then,

A recent thread on the same topic:
http://www.gmh-toran...er&fromsearch=1
I ended up deciding to throw caution to the wind & try to start the original 2600 engine after nearly 13 years of sitting idle & armed with a new battery, rebuilt starter motor & new leads & having already flushed the tank & replaced fuel line hose to the fuell pump, I changed the oil, removed the spark plugs & poured a bit of oil into each cylinder & left it overnight. The next morning I put 20 litres of petrol in the tank & installed starter motor & battery & sprayed WD40 down the spark plug holes & tried to turn the engine over, Nothing happened, I then tried jumping the teminals on the starter & was rewarded with a spark & noise from the solenoid & decided that the problem was possibly due to the neutral safety switch & unplugged it & put a jumper wire to bypass the switch. After a brief pause it turned over,I turned it over in short bursts while watching the fuel pump for the fuel to pump through(It was bone dry) It didn't. I thought that it was a fuel pump problem & pulled off the fuel pump & found that it was working,I then blew compressed air up the fuel line gently to make sure it wasn't blocked & siphoned the petrol through to the fuel pump connection before reconnecting the fuel pump & turning it over again. It then pumped the fuel through the fuel pump o.k. so I installed plugs then leads(wrongly) poured some petrol down the carby & turned the key & was rewarded with a cough & splutter before backfiring & sending flames out the carby. After I rechecked leads & found that I had 3 & 4 leads reversed I corrected that I again poured some petrol down the carby & kicked it over & it fired.ran, then stalled twice,Then continued running after a restart fairly smoothly albeit with lots of smoke once up to running temp, probably due to me being over generous with the oil into the cylinders earlier,I then adjusted the timing & found that it ran really well & soon stopped smoking almost entirely. At first it sounded like there was a slight ticking sound from a tappet or lifter so I removed the rocker cover only to find that it had completely stopped making anything but the usual sounds it was supposed to. It now is running faultlessly after 13 years of not running at all. Admittedly it had only done 62000 miles since new & was in very good condition 15 years ago when I bought it & started on what was to be a respray, but turned into a complete overhaul. I am amazed,I thought it would be completely stuffed after all this time,I was expecting to find lots of sludge/gunk etc. to show up in the oil & in the radiator etc. after it had been run for a while. But so far both are showing no signs of anything like it.
THANKS for all advice given beforehand on this forum by members.

For f*cks sake getting it running isn't gonna be a problem. The trick is in doing it without reducing its life by about 80000ks.

Charged the battery and cranked it over (installed a start button- dodgy ign switch) until fuel started pumping into the carb, then ign on and fired within about 5 revs!
All good! Even with 1yr old fuel????

then repressureize after about 5 minutes or so
i don't tend to worry about that much as most holden motors i've had over the years tend to have some sort of tappet noise at start up

Before people say it YES the oil and fuel should have been changed but the car was not in the position to be easily played with at the time and needed to be started in order to be moved from the crampt area.
