about the sale of compliance plates and identification plates,

Have emailed

So far,

SA has been done before and info posted in the ebay threads section.

Will email tomorow

Am asking what the rules are,
and what the penalties are for the sale and use for plates.

Will post answers as I get them.

Cheers

Good idea Chris, l will be interested to hear what they all have to say assumming they get back to you

Ebay wont stop it, the government either has to have the laws in place or enforce what they already have.

Hi big chris

I have already done that but did not post all replys.
So please post all your replys so others can read.

From what i could tell In Victoria you can sell them no problems but if you try to put them on another car then thats when you will get in trouple this also went for NSW.Cant remember what the case was in QLD and the other states

As for SA if you read my post in ebay you would have seen that in SA

The penalty for offering for sale a plate is $5 000 or imprisonment for
12 months.

The penalty for placing a plate on a vehicle that does not belong to
that vehicle is $10 000 or imprisonment for 2 years.

If we could get all states to follow SA then the problem may be fixed. :furious:

I found all got back to me pretty fast the bloke from SA replyed in 30 minutes and most of the others were forward onto others to sort out my questions.

So good luck

EBAY will remove compliance plates from sale if they are told of their sale, I've told them on a few occassions.

Hi all,

LC I read your post with the South Oz information.
So much for uniform laws in Australia.

The RTA replied this arv,

Recieved from the,
Technical enquiries Section.

Quote,
"The RTA would have no control over the sale of a Compliance Plate. As
the Compliance Plate is issued with the approval of the Federal
Department of Transport and Regional Services (DoTaRS), they, or the
Police, may be able to take action against anyone selling a compliance
plate. DoTaRS can be contacted on: (02) 6274 7111.
......
However the removal of a compliance plate and re-fitting of it to
another vehicle is not legal. Depending on why it was done, normally if
the plate is re-fitted to another vehicle, the chassis number/VIN on the
vehicle would need to be altered to correspond with the number on the
compliance plate. This then becomes an issue for the RTA Vehicle
Identification Inspection Unit and/or possibly the NSW Police. The
Compliance Plate alone is not considered to be an identifier as such. "

"A compliance plate is only compulsory for a new vehicle when it is
initially presented to the Australian market. After the vehicle is
registered, if at a later date, the compliance plate is lost or stolen,
if it can be proven that the vehicle has been previously registered then
re-registration is not a problem. The fact the vehicle does not have a
compliance plate affixed is not in itself a reason for rejection for
registration."

NSW RTA don't appear to consider the compliance plate the ultimate indentification of a vehicle.
Also did not state the penalities involved for using a plate purchased on eBay to change the identity of a car.

Will post more when replies are recieved.

Cheers
Chris.

Hi people i know a lot of you aren't going to like what i write here but here goes anyway. If you think by stopping these plates being sold on ebay is the answer ,or part of "your dreamin".How many of you have heard of and bought parts off friends, aquaintances etc which could quite easily have also had and ellusive set of plates just sittting there ripe for a nice little offer with no one else knowing anything about it. From my point of view i would rather them on ebay where every number can be listed and kept on file as it has be stated on here previously. If someone then wants to check a potential new car out before a purchase, wisely, then wouldn't they be better off doing this than send all of these plates onto the "black market" where anything is possible. My 2 bobs worth.

Hi all,

Flares,
I see the point you are making,
that if these items are sold on ebay,
at least they can be seen,
the info collected,
so other can check it out,
and not get caught out buying a rebirthed car.

I am interested to find out how tuff or weak
the state laws regarding the sale of these items are.
It seems the uniform national transport scheme may still has a very long way to go.

cheers
Chris.

while I agree that having visibility of the tags helps...the problem with having them on ebay is that it serves to legitimise the trade of these plates....The "black market" trade in these plates is much smaller as they can't get the big dollars they want..ebay opens up the market for them and they get more money.

Its a catch 22...we need visibility on ebay to see what dodgy plates are getting around...but we don't want dodgy plates getting around.

FastEH,

you got it in one,

We don't want dodgy plates getting around!!!

I makes it harder for people that have legit collectable cars to sell them
or have the value recognised,
when you can just go an buy plates off ebay and turn any sunbudgie into an A9X or an SS.

Cheers
Chris
