Im seriously thinking about changing my diff gears from 3.55:1 to a higher ratio such as 3:00:1

I have a 2700 - 2900rpm (almost 3000rpm) stall converter and cam is 1600rpm to 6200rpm, currently i rev about 3100rpm at 100kph

If i go down to a 3:00:1 the engine will rev about 2300rpm at 100kph i could imagine

Will this be a problem for my stall converter as its a fair amount higher then 2200rpm.

Does anyone know what will happen and if it will be alright.

Thankyou for any help.

Nathan

Yea will be way better for highway, might get better traction at drags and i redline before i get to the 1/4mile anyway. the max speed is 185km/hr at 6,000rpm

I know new gboxes use a lock up converter, my converter isnt a lock up and im worried that i will damage my converter if i sit on approx 2300rm on the highway.

If the maths is correct, you will probably have trouble keeping the tranny cool I reckon.

leave the 3.55 centre in and run a taller tyre. If you dont plan on doing much drag racing why do you need a stall convertor that high ?

cheers, I thought that might be the case.

Ill leave the 3.55 centre in, I guess you could say the stall may be a tad high for the cam but the combo works very well.

Thanks guys

That CAM rpm range sounds very wide, what type is it?

Do you race on Slicks? Or Semi Slicks?

That combo you have is perfect for the set-up u have i reckon.

I wouldn't go from 3.55 to 3.0... It would feel sluggish and slower!

If anything, I might got from 3.55 to 3.7! LOL

I race on old street tyres lol no way can i afford slicks.

Yea current combo is perfect, just wanted to cruise at low rpm on highway. but never mind, economy isnt too crazy on the highway anyway.

I dont think any gear ratio could make my car sluggish with a 383chev haha I could tow a few trucks. Im currently fitting a tow bar too, will be interesting.

i would then consider going back to a smaller stall or even back to a standard torque convetor

Hi, I have run a T400 with 3000 rpm stall with 3.25 gears behind a big block for several years (235/60/15 tyre). I do a fair bit of highway cruising and the rpm is below the converter stall speed (2750 vs 3000)
I have not had any problems. I do run a large tranny cooler as well as a deep trans sump.
Regards
Rexy

Oh really, maybe 3.25 would be better suited, just a little difference would be nice.

I wouldn't change the stall converted, its a HUGE job to get my auto out and i have done it too many times.

Thanks for all the reply's

You can probably buy a lot of fuel for the cost of making such small savings...? Money better spent elsewhere if there's nothing wrong with the current combo

Was gonna sell or swap my centre for a new one.

Im sure there is alot of people that would swap there 3.25 ratio diff for a 3.55

the last thing i want to do is spend money, around town the chev is pretty decent on fuel but as soon as i get on the highway i watch the fuel gauge go down. Im not sure if its normal or not. I drove from brisbane to south of the gold coast and back with a trailer and it cost me $60 at $1.43 per litre. How much does everyone else drink to do a similar trip.

that sounds like a 200 odd klm journey Nathan so 40 litres towing a trailer doesnt sound too bad to me with a chev

Yeah pretty reasonable for a car like that for 200km, can't see you saving much if anything on a trip like that by changing diff gears

'with a trailer', does that mean a loaded tandem? Because that will use serious petrol regardless of WHAT you're driving. If you want to get a useable economy figure you've gotta do it without that kinda thing. But yeah doesn't sound outrageous to me...

I guess its not too bad, Just towing an 8x5 cage full of furniture, can hardly feel it lol

come to think of it, i think my first 202 in my yellow/black torana chewed more fuel than this, and that was when fuel was 80cents a Litre

I still think 3.25's would make it a little more lazy around town and on the highway.
