I thought I'd start this thread as I know some people are always wanting to find out what is required to run certain times down the drag strip. If we all post out car combination - Engine, trans, diff, suspension we can create a useful data base for every one to refer to.

LX406

1977 LX Hatch

Engine: 400 chev + .030 =406 c.i.
Cast std crank, x rods 5.7", cast flat top pistons. 10.8:1 compression

Texas Race Engines roller rockers 1.5:1 ratio
Victor Jnr manifold. 700 dp holley (unmodified)
ICE ingnition, compu curve box, and rev limiter
Power on engine dyno (flywheel) 449hp 5250rpm 497 ft lbs 4200 rpm

Fuel system: fuel cell in boot area. BG400 pump (since replaced it with a BG 220HR) 1/2 lines, BG regulator up front.

Wheels/tyres: 15x3.5 weld draglites, front runner tyres. 15x8 with 26x10x15 Mickey Thompson Slicks.

Suspension: Front, std height 6 cyl spring, 90/10 shocks. Rear, very low springs, monroe gas shocks (found at the wreckers) boxed arms, nolathane bushes.

Performance: Best time 10.86 @125mph at calder on chilly friday night. Best 60 ft 1.48 sec. That felt really fast, front wheels off the ground by about 1 metre!!

Faults with the car: It launched very hard, but never straight. One time I had to back off as I was aiming for the xmas tree!!

The car is now gone, I sold it. I have the same combo in my HG Prem. It ran 11.51 @117

Now tell us your combo.

LX406 would you happen to have any pics of the hatch at rest? I'd be interested to see how it sat with the suspension setup you had. Also, were you still running Torana front stubs, or the lower HQ?

Cheers,

LX406,
Love that pic of your car man.
Allways strain my eyes to check it out in your avater.

I got a couple of questions for you if you don't mind.

Did you have any kind of chassis connectors?

Were all your bushes nolthane?

What dia were your headers?

Regards Rod.

Liam, It had HQ stub axles swapped from left to right.

Racean69, No chassis connectors, just the steel roll cage. I reckon the car could have done with some more stiffening up.

The bushes in the rear control arms were nolathane. At one race meeting I had a couple pop out and stuff my day up. I welded them in after that.

The pipes were 1" 3/4 4 into one, see pic:

Sweet LX406, thats exactly what I wanted to hear! She sits real nice and obviously hooked up great too. I was tossing up with the HQ stubs but now I'm not bothered about them at all. With your rear springs, how low is low, also what rating where they, 6cyl range or what?

That engine bay is something else, looks mad.

I'm very impressed with your current tonner struggler, thats a great time, must be putting out some good torque.

Cheers,

Liam, go down to your local wreckers and get a set of Camira rear springs. They fit toranas, and are super low.

Good call LX406, I've always been trying to research combinations and results over the net. Top idea :spoton:

OK, I'll have a go, here's one of mine:

LX Sedan
Stock 308 & Standard Heads, tired and needs reco, blowing up oil, probably bad rings?
Possibly a baby cam? don't know, worn with heaps of lifter noise;
Genie Tri-Y Extractors, (one badly dented from accident);
Holley 750 sec vac, with 2inch spacer;
Standard converter (No hi-stall);
TH400, needs reco, flares btw gear changes;
3.08:1 diff gears;
15inch rims with 235's on the back with 60 profile;
Car had heavy, stiff suspension as it was previously used as a tow vehicle be previous owner.

In Febuary this year, this Car ran a best of 14.33 on a 30degree celcius day and then consistent 14.40.

Changes made after that:
Painted it red (which made a huge difference);
Changed the rear springs from the heavy ones to standard 6-cylinder Torana springs which were half the thickness and weight and strength;
235 DOT's (Mickey Thompson Street Slicks);
Dumped the exhaust from the base of the Y intersection (one collector)

Then the car ran a 13.79 in March this year

But it wasn't that simple. We had to tweak the timing a little by turning the dizzy and playing it by ear. I was running AVGAS and with the exhaust dumped it was constantly backfiring. We retarded it a bit and then I got the 13.79 and we were still experimenting. If the day hadn't ended at that point, I could have possibly got a 13.5 out of her with some more tweaking and practice.
The AVGAS didn't make much of a difference and just forced me to have to re-tune the car.

I've heard a lot of people turn green and spew and say that it's not possible for this combo to do 13's. So I'm gonna pull the motor (and auto) out to see if there is a little spirit in it or something, LOL.

Future plans:
Recondition short motor, or use another
L34 Heads, with the bigger valves and double valve springs with a mild port job
286 Crane Cam & lifters
Eddelbrock Performer Manifold
3.45:1 diff gears
Another set (undamaged) of Tri-Y Geni extractors
Dual Exhaust
TH350 with stage-2 trick-kit and 3000 or 3500 Hi-Stall

I wonder what it'll do with all that done? (I want at least a flat 13.0).
Basically, If I can biuld an engine that can pump 100HP more than the current one, I would expect to knock off a second.

Good stuff! I like hearing about the little bits inside the heart of the beast! And the times they run with those good bits!! Obviously winning a race isnt everything, but a race between a couple of you guys would prove extremely worth watching!

Here's my engine specs, yadda yadda...

1980 UC Sunbird (Torana without the badges!!)
179HP bored 60thou (186cu now), steel crank, starfire rods, precision hypatec 8% silicone flat top pistons, ACL race series bearings and piston rings, XU-1 Cam (Duration - In & Ex 280, 0.050" Duration - In & Ex 217, Cam lift - In & Ex 286, Valve lift - In & Ex 456), standard lifters, black 202 pushrods, Yella Terra roller rockers, Ported/shaved/ULP Valve seats/o-size valves/grub screwed rocker studs/double hi-perf valve springs [head work], JP High Vol oil pump, JP High performance timing gears, lightened flywheel, decked block - 10.0:1 Compression... maybe more (cant remember it all!!)
Carby: 350 Holley
Exh: Pacemaker 1 3/4 into straight through 2 1/4 with turbo muffler
Gearbox: Torquemaster 4 speed manual (original and non-rebuilt)
Diff: 3.08:1 Salisbury single spinner
Fuel: BP 98
Power: 101.3rwkW @ 5800rpm

BEST ET: 14.852 @ 95.94mph
60 footers suck ass, so i could see a 14.5 with better traction and a better launch...

Anyone else got a hot 6cyl?? If so, i'd like to hear your internal goodies list and best ET's.... C'mon, dont be shy fellas!!

Thank you guys!
Keith

Ok keithy here goes,

Motor Specs
Blue 202 Block, bored .030', Honed, Decked .004'
Crank Ground, polished
Hypertec Flat-top HQ racing Pistons
Starfire Rods
Chromoly Rings
ACL Race series bearings
39/79 Solid Crow Cam and Solid Lifters
High Energy Sump, High Volume Oil Pump
Straight Cut Timing Gear
Stage 3 Yella Terra Head, Shaved .060', Matchported to both Inlet Manifold and Extractors
Yella Terra Roller Rockers 1.5 Ratio
Triple 45mm Dellortos, Matchported Redline Manfold
Pacemaker Tuned Length Extractors
2 1/2in Exhaust into Lukey straight through muffler to 3inch sidepipe
Pro-Comp Multiple Spark Igniton and Coil
Electronic Ditributor
Top-Gun Leads
Champion Plugs

Drivetrain
Yella Terra Steel Explosion Proof Lightened Flywheel
Solid Brass Button Clutch
Alloy Supra 5 Speed Box
3 Inch Tailshaft
9inch Diff, 3.7 Ratio mini-spool
31 Spine Axels

Things to come are a set of Irridium Plugs, Some MSD leads, and a re-graphed dizzy to suit the cam, ect. Then when cash allows i'll take it to get Dyno Tuned so someone can set-up the carby's propery.

I've ran a 13.5 @ 101 mph, which was without the Pro-Comp ignition, Lightened Flywheel, with 3.08 gearing and with the carbys outta tune. So hopefully when i make it back to the track I can get them times down a little as I now have a set of slicks and few other bits and pieces to come such as a set of Irridium Plugs, Some MSD leads, and a re-graphed dizzy to suit the cam, ect. Then when cash allows i'll take it to get Dyno Tuned so someone can set-up the carby's propery.

So low 13's are in my sights..... For now anyways.

Cheers

Les

MRLCTORANA, well done mate!! I love hearing about the 6cyl's that can stick it up the V8's!! VERY IMPRESSIVE!!

What fuel were you using to run your times? I'm was running premium at the time, i now run BP Ultimate 98 (which is what my dyno run was using)!! And i consider it more impressive that your doing 13's on 3.08:1 diff gearing! Thats why im proud of my times!

One day MRLC, i will have to meet up with you and you can take me for a ride in your beast!

Any other hot 6's out there??
