Hi all

I suspect a lot of people didn't like the plain black cap (because it looked unfinished) and opted for the chrome one.

Just an observation, but the LJ GTR XU1 featured in the road test (Sports Car World, May 1972 p.20) has a chrome and black fuel cap with the Holden Lion.

IT LOOKS BLACK TO ME :tease:

Thanks grant!

Hi All,

Unfortunately, I'm old enough to have seen XU-1s new at Clintons Motors, (now a Toyota dealer) a couple of LCs and more LJs. Each new car I saw had a black cap, 1 I saw in the used car section had the black cap replaced, with a chrome one, by the car salesman, he said it looked better on the car.

Regards Simon

OK most of you know my obsession with petrol caps,
so I am going to add my 5 cents worth.

Black Cap - Found most commonly on LC XU-1,
if I remember correctly it is also the only cap
listed in the parts book for an LC XU1 as well

Lion Head Cap - Found on all LJ models including
XU1, but from pictures of the day I notice that
the early road test cars were still carrying the black cap.

BUT

Gm the picture you posted above of the pink LJ,
well that car is actually an LC that Holden turned
into an LJ, so I wonder if the black cap in the first
picture was just a left over of its days as an LC.

Locking Petrol Cap - IS NOT AN XU1 item, was an
optional accesory for all models.

From my experience - 34 years ownership of XU-1s ( old fart ) - plain black fuel caps were original fitment. My first Torana was a 1971 Bathurst LC ( CK eng. ) which I bought in 1972 - it had the plain black cap when I got it but subsequently I probably bought about 3 replacements because pricks used to pinch them from car parks where I had to leave it - it was my daily transport into Melbourne CBD in those days. That car was really jinxed - useless front draft windows and no steering lock meant that thieves and derros were forever breaking into it - pinching stuff and even having a sleep. I got back to the Melb. Exhibition car park in the dark one night to find a sign on the window " Don't drive - No wheels " - sure enough she was sitting on bricks with my nibless wheels and new Bridgestones gone mate. Eventually the whole car was pinched from my home one night in 1976 - the stripped body shell was recovered from a dam at Christmas Hills in 1977. What a disaster - uninsured and I got $ 100 for the shell which a speedway chap purchased with its tags intact - a very depressing experience and the loss of a fantastic road car. I often wonder about its fate.
The replacement car I bought in 1976 was a June 72 LJ XU-1 which I still have to this day. It had the plain black fuel cap when I got it and incredibly it still has that cap on it today !! Ironically I have acquired a few lion caps as spares from swap meets for next to nothing over the years but have never had to use them. Of course I dont leave the car in public car parks anymore.

Sorry for the diatribe - I grieve for the loss of that car all those years ago - of course my ball and chain loves to chastise me over the episode and never lets me forget it - of course she has the first bob she ever found !!!

Cheers JR

Don,t know if it is really relevant now, but I would like to add my two bits in. If you look at the genuine unregistered XU1 on the famous brick paved area at Fishermans Bend it clearly has the chrome cap with Holden Lion. The photo can be found in the Muscle car magazine that had By the Numbers LC GTR XU1.

Hi 71xu1

It's always relevant because it's one most unresolved XU1 topics. For every person that can prove "plain black" there's another that can prove "chrome". The parts manuals seem to support "plain black" but it seems that the dealers ofter switched caps because they looked better on the display cars.

When you think about it having a chrome cap in a fully blacked out rear it would have been like dogs bxlls on the back of the car.

As the rear panel was blacked out it would be obvious to have a black cap.

Just remember that a lot of promo shots were taken at factory & outlets in a ruddy blush.

Pre delivery cars always have a lot of bits and pieces left to be fitted by the dealer.

In the rush for photos, the correct bits may not always been at hand. Only two years ago I saw commodore in a dealers show room with the wrong hub caps. When asked their reply was they did not have enough of the correct ones for the display vehicle.

So it still happens. I trust the parts manual more in this case. But there are those that are still convinced that a LC/J V8 XU2 actually existed as a production cars and that pigs fly etc etc. Bollox!

After looking at some of my Torana books more often than not in the photos it is a black cap on the Xu1s. I dont think the factory new themselves what was going on half the time in relation to the fuel caps. I would have to go with the parts book and say black. As an example I worked for a Ford dealership as a panelbeater. Once we had a falcon come in straight of the truck from Ford one side had falcon GL door protector moulds the other had Fairmont door protector moulds. It was picked up at pre delivery.

Hi

I guess we have to ask - If the black cap wasn't meant for the XU1, then what was it meant for???

Hi Bazza.

You said:- " The parts manuals seem to support "plain black" ".

Doesn't the parts manual support 'Black'

Hi Guys.

That's what happens when you press the wrong button, without properly reading the post.

I read your post as you being in the 'plain back' camp, when I guess you mean 'all black' & not plain chrome back.

sort of the same topic, when did they start making replica fuel caps as I have a 2600 cap (never used) that I found in 1987 but there is no part number on it unless it's under the cork seal.

Cheers Chris
