Hi,
My BW diff under the LX is leaking oil slowly, the car has been on car ramps for 3 weeks now and the puddle of oil is about half the size of an A4 sheet of paper.
Is there a seal or something at the tailshaft end of the diff?
Any other ideas?
Also what oil/fluid should I be puttting in it to top it up for the time being?

There is a pinion seal at the front of the diff housing where the pinion flange comes out.
BW diffs have a bad habit of leaking oil past the splines of the pinion gear (where the yoke slides on) this will cause oil to leak out near the nut under the tailshaft flange.
Give it a quick degrease and check where the actual leak is and let us know.

From memory when I looked at it closely previously I think it is leaking from where the pinion flange comes out.

In that case it would be the pinion seal which unfortunately means removing the flange/yoke - mark it carefully and count the number of turns so you can put it back exactly and do not overtighten it (this sets pinion bearing preload).
A normal 80W90 gear oil should be fine, use a limited slip oil or an additive if its LSD.

I have been quoted $125 but I should be able to do it myself.
So your talking about the number of turns on the nut behind the flange?
Bloody teething problems, just got it back on the road after front end issues!

Yes, if you don't put it back in exactly the same spot without any overtightening then you change the bearing preload. You'll probably need a puller of some sort to get the flange off the pinion spline, pretty straight forward though.So your talking about the number of turns on the nut behind the flange?

Yeah no worries, I do have a puller that should be able to do that.
