Engine number is stamped on a machined pad on the passanger side of the block adjacent to the head. An original engine will have the prefix HT followed by four or five numbers depending on the build date. The block cast date is cast on the front edge of the block, passanger side and just below the temperature sender in the inlet manifold. It will be one or two numbers followed by a letter and a single number eg: 24J4.
The first number/s are the day date, the letter is the month (A=Jan, B=Feb, C=Mar etc, although the letter I is not used) and the final number is the year 3= 1973, 4=1974, 5=1975 etc.
The casting month should be the upto two months earlier than the build date on the Compliance Plate (firewall drivers side) but not later.
Post up all the numbers for a better idea of the car you are considering.

Don't discount the car if it's not the original engine especially if it modified or you intend to modify it. Yes another engine (any engine bar the original one) will de-value a totally original or properly restored car but it shouldn't affect one that has been flared and had other such modifications. If you like it and think it's a good thing for a good price buy it. Even if you want to do a concours resto you can always put an NT block in it and it can still then be classed as a totally original car with a factory replacement engine.
