Hi Guys, I am looking for some tyres with GRIP.

The ones I currently run although not very old are absolutely useless in the wet. See Pic.

Posted Image

What I am seeking is info from anyone who uses half race/road tyres in the 245/50/15 to 265/50/15
with what I consider an ideal size being 255/50/15 which should?? appease the rego pit inspection boys in the ACT.

Any help or suggestions would be handy. What do you run and where do you get em?

Cheers
Herne

I got the mastercraft tyres, and they are much better than T/A's in the wet. Not sure what else is out there, but i think the whole big footprint of a 265 means that aquaplaning in the wet is your biggest problem. I think most tyres are going to have trouble getting grip in the wet.

i believe the 285x40x15 yokahamas are great in the wet, they are directional tyres.

i have 2 of the new batch for the L34, but havent used them yet.

Wayne (outer control) has them on his L34 race car, so his opinion would be valuable.

I found them ^^^ and T/A's to be equally as bad in the wet esp when running a stally. Given a choice I would NOT run either of these tyres.

I am not sure I wouldn't have clearance problems running a 285 ;) Not to mention rego problems lol But its worth considering just the same.

Damn shame I can't try them before buying ;)

Get yourself some ET streets if grip is a priority. By far the best wet grip of anything I have ever used and are simply magic in the dry. If you are not a dickhead doing burnouts all the time they will last reasonably. My last set are nearly done after 14,000km.
I wouldnt use anything else unless I was doing heaps and heaps of Ks.

Thanks for the tip Rexy, who makes em? Brand name?

I do minimum K's each year so wear is not a concern the tyres are 'hard as' well before the tread runs out.
I take it they 'are' available in the required size??

I think I read somewhere that those Mastercraft tyres are basically the same as Cooper Cobras? That would explain the crap grip in the wet, been there done that.

Mine currently has Maxxis Marauders in 265/50/15 which I'm quite pleased with, they seem to have reasonable grip in both wet and dry (certainly better than the Coopers). They are directional too, without being a strange style tread pattern, although perhaps a little 4x4 looking. Cheap too (as far as cheap goes in a tyre this size)

They are Mickey Thompson ET street tyres. They are generally available from race/performance parts suppliers. I get mine from Superplus in melbourne (decor drive Hallam 03 07031119) but I see them advertised on ebay from various other places like CMP etc. The last time I bought some about three years ago they were available in 235/60/15, 255/60/15, 275/60/15, 275/50/15 as well as some other smaller 15 inch sizes and one or two larger rim fitments. If you check the superplus website or Mickey Thompson site directly the will have a current list. Superplus told me today the 255/60/15s will be about $375 a tyre when the new stock arrives in a few weeks. Like you, I do few Ks so other "normal" tyres tend to go off before they wear out. There is a huge gap grip wise between a normal performance tyre and the ET streets.

I wonder what the cost of getting M/T ET's direct from the states would be?

Just went to Summit, for some 275/50/15's the cost including shipping would be US$669.75 and you'd have to pick up from the airport.

So buying them locally is probably cheaper!

get them delivered to these guys in the usa ( http://www.usatoaus.com/) then they ship to aus,

4 tyres are $100
4 rims are $100
engine's are around $500 i think.

i spoke to the guy on the phone and he said you wait is around one month..... but if you don't need them in a rush it's well worth it!

I think he's talking MTs, a 255/60 is not going to be an easy fit on a flared Torana though

I thought it might have been MT's and yes that's a good point, I am ONLY interested in something 'wide' in the 50 or even 40 series.
I missed the 60 part. Thanks ;)

I think you will be disapointed with the grip the 352s have. Unless the compound has changed greatly since I last had a set they are pretty useless. If you are after a certain "look" then use them but if you want real grip then I respectfully suggest you look elsewhere.

PS:What HP/torque/trans and rear ratio are you running?

Some figures I do not release - HP is sufficient for now and on par with many 355's, Torque is a lot, diff ratio is now 3.55:1, Trans is modified Tri.

No matter what the grip I wont be putting 60 series on the arse end, they are just too tall and stally is 2500 and thus suitable for road/long trip use.

i believe the 285x40x15 yokahamas are great in the wet, they are directional tyres.

i have 2 of the new batch for the L34, but havent used them yet.

Wayne (outer control) has them on his L34 race car, so his opinion would be valuable.

From my calculations 285/40s would be magic, ever so slightly less rolling diameter than a 265/50, I'd love a set but you need deep pockets!

The Cooper Cobras are awful in the wet too, the Maxxis ones I have now are pretty good but they're starting to wear out... :dontknow:
