Hi guys, I am a newbie on toranas, and just starting learning about them. My Dad is good with cars, and I am slowly learning. As well as school, I have worked part time and saved enough to get a nice looking torana. (am looking to spend 13-14 K). I found a GTR Xu1 LJ replica, just wondering your thoughts on this car, what to look out for when going out to have a look at one for sale and the value of the car. Is there some test I should get when going out to the car to make sure the car is in perfect order as stated? Or are there any tips one what to look for when having a look at such an old car?
Thanks guys, if you have any material for me to read, eg sites on this torana learning how to fix it, general maintenance/mods etc, let me know.
Cheers
salts

:welcome: Michael

It's great to see the younger generation getting involved with such an iconic and much loved cars as our Toranas :spoton:

Plenty of help here and all you have to do is ask.

If you know of a mechanic of mature age ie has been around cars for a long time, then ask him to go along and check out this machine.

Find out any history on the car ie if it has come from a coastal area as it may have excessive rust.
A small magnet to place around the usual rust areas will soon tell you if it has been bogged up.

Good luck, regards .... Barry

Cheers guys, thanks for all of your help. Car sold for 20 K, thoguht that was a bit exy, dono if he was lying but wow. car must have been imaculate...not worried, out of my price range anyway haha...I just posted up a new question about value on a 1971 LC GTR. It is a legit GTR, pretty much original, my uncle said he might sell it to me for a discount...The engine was replaced in 1995 with a brand new 186 block.-are they any good? The rest of the car is pretty original, fairly good condition...Just wondering, if i gave 13-14 K for the car, is that a bargain? I noticed car sales valuations where privately 22K to 29K, so thought i would ask...Cheers guys thanks for all your help...remember a rough estimate is fine, i understand you need to see the car...Just let me know if all is good, like minimal rust, al the other stuff, is it a bargain? And what should I check on the car as well, like because it is so original is there stuff I should look at? Cheers guys!!!

G'day Salts

A late 1971 LC GTR would have had the 2850S (173S) motor and M20 (Aussie 4 speed) gear box. The 2850S are fairly rare.

If the car is mechanically sound with minimal rust and even though it has the 186 motor then 13-14 K would be a good price for you to pay ie IT'S A BARGAIN so grab it.

Put up the VIN tag info (skinny tag on left of radiator support panel), Body ID plate (rectangle plate on right of radiator support panel) info, the ADR (found under the wiper motor) tag info and the body serial number (stamped into the inner guard next to the carby). This one should match the number on the ADR tag.

Be aware that if you can't do much of the work yourself then $75/hr is not cheap to do a car up.

Ball park figures for the interior upto $2,500, reco motor $3Gs, exterior paint job $8-10Gs.

You might be lucky to pick up a 2600S GTR motor for $2,000 and the 2850S $2,500 or more as they are rare as rocking horse poo so see if you can chase up the original motor.

I've been out of the little Toranas for 3 years now so I will probably be corrected on some of those figures.

The 186 block is a good one to have and putting a 161 head on it will make it even better.

Seeing how the motor is fairly fresh then use it till you locate a GTR motor if that is the way you want to go.

Hope this helps mate :spoton:

Regards ... Barry
