The last gauge on my SLR dash that is not working is the oil pressure. I have followed the wiring and it looks like a previous owner of the car has run a wire direct from the Oil Pressure Sender to an aftermarket gauge and bypassed the original wiring for the SLR dash gauge. Couple of questions: is there a way to test the original Oil Pressure gauge to see if it works, what colour wire coming out of the back of the dash is the correct one for the Oil pressure gauge sender wire and what should the oil pressure sender for an SLR gauge look like (253)? The current sender is quite large and is a dome shape on top, just trying to see if I can identify if it it the correct one for the original SLR gauge. All help appreciated!

G'day
The oil pressure light on most GMH vehicles is dark blue from memory, and the gauge uses the same wire.
the oil pressure sender unit is on the oil pump body on the V8 and in the side of the block in the 6,check the colour there, you can check for continuityy with a multi meter

I think the dome shaped sender is a later model one, the Torana one should be a tin can version. There are two or three different ranges but I don't think any of the factory ones will damage the gauge, it just won't read right

I have compared pictures of what the LH Torana oil pressure sender should look like and it is not the one in the car. Guessing the aftermarket gauge in the dash has a different unique sender that has been used. I am trying to restore all the original gauges and remove the aftermarket stuff but before I lay out $80 for the right sender, is there any way I can test if the Oil pressure gauge in the SLR dash actually works? Can the dash gauge break?

Any aftermarket gauge is highly likely to have its own sender that won't read correctly with a factory gauge.
The oil pressure, fuel, and temp gauges all use the same input range, just temporarily connect your oil pressure gauge to one of the other inputs and see if it reads the same to test it.

whenever i get a gauge that i think is faulty i remove the wire to the sender and earth it out , the gauge (if working) should move its way to full .of course this will not tell you how accurate the gauge is, only that it works and the wiring is ok .

Except that the gauge may not work next time, when you earth it out you're giving it a signal that is well outside the normal range that the gauge is designed for and they're quite sensitive.
