Hi everyone I have just bought a UC hatch with a 308 and a trimatic. I want to convert this car to a manual transmission preferably a Supra 5 speed. I have noticfed that there are different model types and I was wanting to know which is the best fit and function for the car. Other questions include:
  • Where would I get the correct cross member
  • Hydraulic or cable set up
  • Is there anyone in Sydney that specialises in this type of conversion
  • Anything else I should know?
Thanks

W55 through W59 are all the same box with different ratio sets, pick whichever suits you best. R154 is the Supra Turbo box which is a stronger option if you are planning on some decent horsepower.

Most conversion bell housings are set up to run the original clutch release setup so you can go hydraulic or not.

Dellow are generally pretty good

If you have more than 300ftlb of flywheel torque and use it every now and again you will eventually break the box ( often break the teeth off 2nd gear). As long as you can do all the work yourself (or are rich) and dont mind buying another box every few years then go for it.

Thanks Rexy, what is the best alternate option. I did have a VH SL/E with a very strong 308 and a Supra 5 speed and it did end up breaking.... it was a beautiful box to use though which is why I want to go back to one.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. Most of the boxes capable of taking big torque are similarly expensive ie 2.5k plus in addition to all the ancillaries to fit them up. You do only spend this money once though. I found the feel of the R154 pretty much the same as the W55 it replaced. If you already have a pile of bits to suit a supra conversion then the R154 will probably be the cheapest path for you given how many of the odds and ends are useable eg same clutch/bellhousing.
