Hi,

i just wanted to add grunt to my torry so i wanted to put a 308 in instead of my 186. I was wondering would there be any changes to be made. ie. in the engine bay so it would fit, or any other changes. could i just take the 6 out and chuck in the 8. btw its a manual so would the 8 also have to be from a manual?
also i was wondering about fuel economy. the 6 seems to guzzle, and wanted to know if i could chuck an lpg system on the 8.
would this loose power and if so, how much?
would it be better to get a 308 out of an old unrego'd car with lpg and put this in? would this be easy?
thanks for all your suggestions.

Firstly, welcome to the forums. The easiest way would be to buy another vehicle that has a V8 on gas already. Make sure you get a set of V8 front springs, as the 6 cyl ones will be too soft. Get a new pair of front shockers at the same time. There are a million and one other things that you could/should check as well, but start there and post again if you have any trouble.

hi,

the front sits up quite high, and some people have suggested that it could
have v8 springs in there already and could of had a v8 before i bought it
not long ago. is there a way to check the springs?
if its possible, i was looking for all info at once so i could go out and buy all necessary equipment to put it in at once.
:D

cheers and happy easter!

If the springs have been incorrectly installed, it could cause the car to sit too high. Somebody could've put in HQ springs, as this would cause the same problem. The bottom of the spring sits in a recess in the lower arm. Only way to check the springs is to remove them and measure the wire diameter and the uncompressed lenght. Alternatively, you could take them to Pedders etc. and they should be able to tell you.

you will need to get the V8 engine mounts, V8 exhaust. you wont be able to use the gearbox from your 186, you will need to get a V8 one or modify your 6 cylinder one.
if you need to know anything else just ask, because heaps of people on the forums have done it, including me.
Cheers,
Cohen

Thanks!

so this is basically all the stuff that would have to be done?
this shouldn't be too hard cos i'll get the parts off a v8 car and put in mine.

Your best bet is to pull the v8 out of another LH/X Torana, you'll haver everything you need then.
If you start pulling it out of early model commodores etc. Bits and pieces will and won't match up, it's still not too hard a job even then.

Should be fairly straight forward, if you get stuck just ask; some simple things can be confusing or just so simple you overlook the answer when you're hard at work =]

Plus there would be plenty of people here who would have any missing/damaged bits you need.
