Most Primer fillers are 4:1:1 thats probably why he recommended it, what brand are you using?. I'm asking as you would probably need to get a measuring/mixing stick with the 5:1:1 ratio on it as most mixing sticks have 4:1:1 for primers and 2:1 for topcoats on the other side.
I normally only use about 1/3 of the thinners part so it builds a bit better.

if you go with the tin it will dry faster in this cold weather i'll go 5.1.1 but nont mix too much at a time most 300ml just to fill the gun
Wouldnt a mix of 4:1 go off quicker than 5:1 since theres more hardener in 4:1 mix?

mix as much reducer as you like to get the consistancy your after.
generally you wont need much reducer as the hardener thins it down a lot

Excuse my stupidity when it comes to 2pack but is reducer the same as thinners, what type of thinners do i use to thin down the mix if thats the case? Still learning about 2pack, before i get to the colour ill be picking some brains at the paint shop
