Ith ID plate usually gives it away.

I think you'll find a lot have been fitted with GTS fronts and HQ nose cones over the years because they look better....

HJ's onwards also had different internal door handles i believe, the HQ ones are like the lc lj torana? and the HJ onwards are like the LH LX etc once again, on the sedans, Utes could be different

A question regarding the original 1-Tonners Hq-Hj-Hx-Hz, they all have the same HQ style front originally how do you tell the difference???? Different mirrors, different trays??? They all look identical to me
You can't tell them apart immediately by looking. Not all HJ-HZ tonners used the HQ style front either. Special Vehicle package BO6 (Ambulance) used the equivalent HJ-HZ Premier front on both tonner and panel van. Plus you could also order another special vehicle package XY7 for at least HJ-HZ that still gave you the commercial front but had chrome grille, headlight surrounds, hub caps and bumper bar + bolts. Here is the easiest way in the absence of ID plates, to tell them apart.
HQ - HQ dash with steel glovebox front;
HJ - wide HJ speedo except where GTS dash fitted. Then look for high beam switch on floor and wipers on fascia. Also had full rat-trap clutch and big firewall harness plug like HQ but no holes for accelerator linkages as HJ used full cable. Small ID tag rivet holes except very first of HJ. Retractable seatbelt mount holes at about shoulder height in cabin (even for 1974 HJ which didn't have retractables).
HX - white needle dash, no RTS badges on guards or on dash;
HZ - RTS badges, yellow needle dash. Late HZ (approx 8th or 9th month 1978 onwards) had twin clutch pedal pivot points. Rear swaybar mounts on body. Not much else different from HX.

Except I've now added a temperature gauge for added peace of mind.

hq coupes had hq fronts hj coupe had a hj front hx le coupe had a different grille to the hj coupe but the same style front as hj not hq...hx is where the coupes ended..
utes and vans were the same as just stated...
one tonners unless optioned otherwise with what byron has stated all had hq front sheet metal up to hz and then a complete front change for wb...ambulance pack was available on 1 tonners which gave them the hj hx hz style front..

Way off the mark! The only HQ-HX coupes to have HQ nose were HQ. HJ LS had HJ Premier front, HJ GTS had HJ GTS front, HX LE had it's own front but basically HX GTS with Premier nose.
Yes tonners used HQ style front, unless they were an Ambulance pack (BO6) where they got Premier front (from HJ-HZ) and also Premier doortrims and armrests. BO6 was available on tonner and panel van.

they have the same differences as there sedan counterparts....
Looks like there's more to it than this....
Seems like quite a complicated model.

That isn't a HQ nose, its not a HJ Premier nose, and I'm pretty sure its not an ambulance pack.

So WTF is that on my tonner?

potta,that is the 1 tonner commercial front...which was hq based....the nose cone and radiator supports are no different to hq except that they have holes in them to take the blinkers...the grille is metal but a plastic hq grille will slide right in...the front bar and brackets are unique to the commercial front and again will fit from hq to hz...the gaurds bonnet and cowl panel are all hq....

I think maybe I am wrong.
Just checked wikipedia where there are two pics of a 1 tonner and a ute with the commercial fronts but normal mirrors.
