I can't remember if this question has been asked before or not (did a quick search, but too broad)...

What I wish to do is this - mount a fuel pressure gauge outside the car on the cowl (near the windscreen wipers). I have an A9X scoop, so rather than mount the gauge in full view of the world, I want to semi hide it (well as much as possible) by placing it in front of the scoop area toward the centre of the windscreen.

I am yet to do any measuring or mocking up, but just keen to hear if anyone else has done this before?

I would prefer to mount the gauge on the actual fixed cowl, and not the bonnet itself (so that the fuel line running to it is not constantly moved by opening and closing the bonnet - and potentially leading to fatigue over time).

I'm assuming a 2-5/8" gauge held in a cup might be too big?

Perhaps 2-1/16" size is the go?

Any ideas, or photos would be great.

Cool idea, should have room for a few gauges. Only risk might be fuel line proximity to the dizzy? Also note that a lot of air pushes through there at high speed.

I'd go the 2-1/16" or 50mm gauge to get the right angle and hide it deep inside.

I run a mechanical fuel pressure & mechanical oil pressure guage on the wiper cowl of my SLR. I used braided steel lines for both & speedflow fittings for reliabilty. I've been told the placement, chrome cups etc isn't legal but then alot things aren't these days. I've placed them as close to the centre of the panel as possible while still positioning them so i can read them at a quick glance. Maybe with a scoop on the bonnet i could get them engineered but that'll be something i look at in the future. Anyhow, here are some pics.

I run a fuel pressure guage under the scoop, mounted to the bonnet itself.

Howard, I'm assuming it's just a smallish size gauge then? Don't suppose you have any pic showing how it looks? And I'm curious to know what the visibility is like from inside the cabin. I just dug through some old photos of your car but couldn't see anything showing it.

LH SLR - love the look of those big gauges... very nice. I'm tempted to even run matt black cups, to blend them in as much as possible. Or I could paint the cups blue to match my car. My main aim is not drawing attention to them from Mr. Plod. (Personally I love the look of triple chrome gauges mounted on the drivers side). But I'm aiming for subtle this time :)

LXCHEV I have one of the smaller autometer fuel gauges mounted under my scoop. I will see if i can find some pictures.

If you look through the bayswater show last year I think you may have taken the pictures of my engine bay and you can see the gauge in those photos.

It is a pain though if you have the bonnet up and you are starting the car you can't see the gauge.

And I'm curious to know what the visibility is like from inside the cabin.

That part should be fine, its easy enough to see the air cleaner inside the scoop so a gauge at the back should be plenty visible

Yes, mine is a 50mm VDO, I will get a pic posted this week. I have it wired so it is always internally illuminated to improve visibility.

Good stuff guys.

IFA - yep, found the photos, I can see what you mean. The only drama, as you mentioned, would be not seeing the gauge if the bonnet is up, but I wouldn't be worried about that as I want a gauge to monitor under driving conditions anyway. I can see that you've angled your gauge towards the drivers seat too, very nice.

Howard, you're an ideas man :) Having the gauge permanently illuminated is a top idea. 50mm is pretty much 2", so it looks like the smaller gauges are definitely the go. If you do get around to posting a pic, it will be good to see, thanks very much.

Borrowed a 2-5/8" gauge and cup off a mate today to do some trial fitting. Looks like it'll work beautifully exactly as I wanted. I'll try to get a photo when I get a chance, but looking good!

Nice find, that's good to see. He only has a lazy 9 gauges in that car! hahaha, I wouldn't know where to look.

Loving the in-car footage just after the 3:00 minute mark when he went skywards too, that's sweet :)
