Hi guys,

i"m wondering if anyone can help me, my brothers has a 2 door lc with an inj 304 (standard) that's just starting overheating....we've done all the normal things by replaced the water pump, new thermostat, had the ally radiator cleaned out and new radiator cap.. this hasn't fixed the problem!!:Headbang2: i have noticed that when the motor is first started there seems to be a burnt oil smell coming from the motor???!!!! in the near future the motor will be getting a stroker kit through it but in the mean time we can't get the old girl on the streets which is getting me lil bro down as you could imagine....

sometimes new thermostats can be dodgy to, iv had the problem of brand new ones sticking. but also what radiator are you running in it? the commodore alloy one? or a standard torana v8 radiator? andd what kind of cooling system do you have on it?? single or twin thermos? does it have a shroud? and does it only overheat sttanding still or driving down the road?

it's running an aftermarket ally 3-4 core radiator, twin thermos (no shroud)... it's only just started doing. even while just driving up the road yesterday it started over heating with the thermos on... he bought the car with the motor in it, the bloke he got it off said it's only been in there for a year

i'm thinking it's not the thermostat because the heat issue was there before hence the reason we got all the new cooling gear. the thermo's are def pulling air into the radiator. i think the bloke that owned it previously had heat issues too....so maybe the thermos aren't coping and not enough air is getting pulled through, but you would assume that when the car is traveling the car would cool down...

is there a chance that the water channels in the block could be blocked or slightly blocked??? the motor was sitting still while the interior was getting done

What does it go like? Enough power?

Also, decribe "overheating".
Is it boiling? Water coming out of the cap? Or is the gauge just running high?

when was the last time you changed the coolant in it? or have you changed it and possibly put different stuff in with out flushing the block out well enough?? try flushing it and reverse flushing it and see how much shit comes out? and your right it should be running normal when driving along so it shouldn't be much to do with the thermo's.

it was steaming hard when we pulled up to a servo...around 5 mins after starting it up...i think the power is down but it's hard for me to judge cos the last v8 i had was 450hp at the treads.

Have you had the heads of the engine? Are the inlet manifold to head gaskets installed correctly?
Remove the thermostat and insert a piece of wire into the manifold water passage and measure how far it can be inserted. If the gaskets are installed correctly the wire should be able to be pushed through into the cylinder heads, if not it means the gasket is blocking the passage and preventing the coolant from circulating properly. You only need one gasket to be installed incorrectly to cause major overheating issues.

Also compression test if all else seems ok.
