Per length, whatever you have managed to weigh, or if you know anywhere that I could find out?

Interested in both thin wall chromo and mild steel, and even alloy might be interesting if you have any figures.

Put up the outside diameter and wall thickness you propose to use

Depends on crhome moly, or cold drawn seamless steel etc.
If I remember ove the weekend I will grab the scales and grab a length from the shed (cold drawn seamless)

Okay here are some CAMS Reg sizes:

Say a 44.45mm (1.75") with a 2.5mm wall thickness or 50mm with a 2mm wall thickness

and 38mm with 2.5 wall thickness or 40mm with a 2mm wall thickness

I guess I could just do some basic maths and work out the volume & use a density off a chart, but I was hoping that someone with practical experience could just say "when i did my car, this much weighed about this much" blah blah blah

I don't know exactly what length I need, basically just looking for ballparks lol. I'm tempted to put an incomplete (half) CAMS spec cage in the blue car

44.45mm (1.75") with a 2.5mm wall thickness = 2.69kg/m
50mm with a 2mm wall thickness = 1.91kg/m (1.6mm thickness)
38mm with 2.5 wall thickness = 2.27kg/m
40mm with a 2mm wall thickness = 1.52kg/m (1.6mm thickness)

I have a 6-point bolt-in polished aluminium rollcage pulled out of a LH/LX, weighs about 12kg all up including the anchor plates and bolts

Did all those calcs ages ago. Yup 50x2mm and 40x2mm gives you the strongest roll cage at the least weight. I'd have to pull my books out for the modulus of elasticity calc, or whatever calc it is to give you the strength, but yeah, I worked out that was the best.

Yeah Pat that was my assumption, those are the sizes you used in your cage I imagine? MS yeah? Did you fab it or someone else? Any comments about weight etc?

Yes Heath, me and my brother made it. The 50x2 and 40x2 give you the lowest weight and the highest strength. Besides that there are only two suppliers of seemless pipe in Australia (both brothers). The other thing is, that the smaller size but thicker wall thickness is not available, so it sort of becomes all academic.

My front legs are also 50mm, where they only have to be 40mm in the regs, but it just works out to be full lengths of tube if you make them 50mm, and presumably a bit safer.

One length of 50mm and two lengths of 40mm.

Great Thread Heath,

Has anyone got the measurements/amount of tubing/weight and pictures of an LC / LJ  CAMS 6 point roll-cage.

Need one for the RAT at some time in the Future.
