Hi all

Maybe I have developed terminal stupidity, but I am trying to get my head around the nexus between the VIN, Vehicle ID (also called Body ID) and Compliance Plate tags.

As far as I can see, the only cross-check between any of the tags and your car is the Chassis Number that appears on the compliance plate and the number stamped (in the case of say LJ Toranas) inside the engine bay on the passenger side.

GMH can tell you whether your VIN fits your vehicle type and production date, but not necessarily whether it applies to your specific vehicle ie. it could be from any similiarly equipped vehicle produced around that time.

Equally, the Vehicle ID plate only tells you (if the model number is correct) whether it may belong to your vehicle.

What is the difference between the Chassis number and the Body Number?

What is the difference between the Chassis number and the Body Number?

One number is assigned to the cars body and the other is to the chassis, 2 different parts that make the car.

Check my post here about the VIN and Chassis No.

Post 45236

The chassis no is stamped onto the body sheetmetal somewhere, ie not on a tag.

In the old days cars had separate chassis with a body put onto the chassis, this allowed any type of body to be fitted to a standard chassis, ie a chassis built by Chevrolet could have a sedan, coupe or tourer body fitted to it.

With the monocoque chassis that is used today there is no separate chassis, production line techniques allow for the engine and front suspension to be assembled separately then attached to the rest of the body, so its like having a front half chassis and a rear half chassis, having a chassis no is a hangover from the old assembly tecniques.

Only GMH records could verify what body was attached to which "chassis".

Bazza I THINK You are mixing up the plate names as confuzzen say!

1) safety compliance plate: Located drivers side fire wall: this matchers chassis number. and gives the date in witch the body and chassis were co-joined

2)vehicle identification plate VIN:located drivers side front suport: this tells you the goods, and VAP: vehicle assemble plant:ie.( H2 BRIS) -(LI L2 ADEL)

3) Body identification plate:Located front left
:model 82911
: body 507-A 507TH GTR/XUI ADEL BUILD

: trim 1844 40X
BRIS INCLUED ALL THE LCs IN THE BODY NUMBERING for the GTR XU1
ADEL INCLUED ONLY THE GTR AND XUI IN ITS NUMBERING FOR THAT SERIES

you should be abel to match all the plates up to the car
